Job Description

Our client is looking for an  Environmental Compliance Specialist  to ensure environmental regulatory compliance through monitoring, inspections, and audits on transit, transportation, and other infrastructure construction projects. The successful candidate will join our growing Environmental Team in Toronto, Ontario.

Duties and Key Responsibilities :

  • Under the direction of the Environmental Compliance Lead, carry out review of the contractors’ regulatory compliance during construction to ensure that environmental requirements are correctly established, implemented, and maintained during construction activities.
  • Review, provide critical insight and comment on contractors’ environmental deliverables (e.g., environmental management plans, technical reports, monthly progress reports, monitoring reports, schedule etc.) to ensure compliance with project agreements and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordination of the environmental compliance team to ensure deliverables are submitted in accordance with the schedule and that the quality assurance process is followed.
  • Critically assess environmental impacts of non-compliance by contractors and develop responses and measures to mitigate the environmental impacts of non-compliance, including corrective actions, preventative actions, and assessment of root causes.
  • Review the results of environmental site inspections, audits, and other environmental monitoring (such as erosion and sediment control measures) and take action to ensure that contractors are meeting their environmental requirements, which may be regulatory, contractual, and / or permits and approvals-based.
  • Serve as a point-of-contact and coordinate internally with subject matter experts to ensure the timely and efficient review of deliverables, liaising internally across departments as well as externally with the client and regulatory agencies.
  • Contribute to and participate in environmental working group meetings to report on and discuss compliance related issues.

Education | Experience :

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline such as environmental science, engineering, environmental planning, physical geography, or environmental studies.
  • Minimum three (3) years of environmental compliance, environmental inspection, risk mitigation / monitoring, permitting and / or environmental assessment experience.
  • Experience serving in a lead role or supporting the establishment and implementation of environmental compliance programs.
  • An understanding of transportation, transit and municipal infrastructure construction projects gained through practical experience.
  • Must have working knowledge of Environmental Management Systems and their implementation. Additionally, experience or familiarity with various environmental disciplines that comprise large-scale construction activities is considered an asset, including, but not limited to : Erosion and Sediment ControlAir Quality MonitoringNoise & Vibration MonitoringCultural Heritage and ArchaeologyNatural HeritageExcess soil and groundwater managementDewatering operations
  • Familiarity with ISO 140001 principles of environmental management in the construction industry would be an asset.
  • Be able to participate in or lead site visits within the GTA as well as attend in-person meetings on an as-needed basis.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Successful candidate must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to collaborate within a team environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Outlook, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
