What you can expect to do here :

Leadership of the HSE Team of HSE Advisors supporting Office, Facilities, Labs, Functional Support Teams (FSTs) and Warehouses, to develop the competence through continuous learning (i.

e., HSE Training), feedback on their performance, and coaching on areas to improve.

  • Set HSE Advisor personal performance objectives both in line with their development needs and the objectives set by the HSE department.
  • Ensure the HSEQ vision, mission and focus is understood by the team and people leaders the individual is interfacing with.
  • Collaborating with the broader HSEQ team.
  • Be responsible for aspects of people management including but not limited to : recruitment, compensation, succession, performance management, talent, and leadership development.
  • Liaise and support functional support teams’ and facilities leadership with all matters pertaining to HSE and emergency / crisis management efforts.
  • Ensure the Advisors are providing support and collaborating with the facilities, labs, warehouse, and real estate groups in execution of operations and maintenance of facilities and construction improvement projects to WSP property.

This includes ensuring any contractor engagement is in line with standard WSP project execution, HSEQ requirements and risk management processes.

  • Advise leaders and facility managers on improvements to facilities which will reduce the risk of working and operating company facilities.
  • Ensure all facilities have appropriate risk management strategies and emergency response resources and processes in place.
  • Support the facility management in the implementation of the Joint Health and Safety Committee and Office Safety and Environment Coordinator roles.
  • Cascade messages and support the roll out of the Goals and Objectives of the HSEQ team including new procedures, systems, and practices.
  • Stay up to date on pertinent legislation and make recommendations to the HSEQ Program team to ensure issues are addressed in the management system.
  • Seek and give feedback to and from business leaders within the scope to ensure the service delivery from the team is meeting the needs of the leaders.
  • Support facility and FST leaders in achieving HSEQ KPIs. Develop strategies and plans to improve.
  • Ensures that the key support provided by the Advisors is aligned with HSE Management System (i.e. Policy, Programs, Procedures and Processes), WSP’s Project Delivery Lifecycle, Hierarchy of Controls (HoC), provincial HSE regulatory requirements and HSE department objectives.
  • Support the advisors in tailoring any WSP Management System elements to the sector needs as required ensuring that any changes are risk based and managed appropriately ensuring that the changes meet or exceed WSP requirements, and the appropriate governance is applied.
  • Ensures consistency of the HSE Team of Advisors and holds employees accountable to the HSE Management System.
  • Visit the workplace and observe how the work is done, how risks are identified and mitigated through the hierarchy of controls and verify with the workers if the means are their disposal are sufficient, adequate & effective.
  • Collaborate with the HSE Expertise team and coordinate and ensure competent involvement of the Advisors in the investigation, root cause analysis, and corrective / preventive action process.
  • Support business operations performing incident investigations and root cause analysis, identify proper corrective actions, monitor tracking and closure of actions in WSP’s online reporting system;

and collaborate with HSE Expertise Team (e.g., High Potential investigations), as required.

Support the Director & Deputy Vice President HSE Operations Team, in their implementation and continuous improvement for all related processes.

What you’ll bring to WSP :

  • Undergraduate degree in a related discipline (Engineering, OHS, Environment) or combination of experience and education.
  • Designation of Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Registered Industrial Hygienist (ROH).
  • Minimum 10 years of experience, five of which in a leadership position in HSE.
  • Bilingualism (French / English) an asset.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of HSE legislation, occupational HSE compliance requirements and regulatory structure in all Canadian jurisdictions.
  • Expertise and knowledge of best-in-class HSE Management System, including programs, standards, processes and requirements, risk assessment processes and techniques and training in hazard recognition, assessment, and control.
  • Experience in incident investigation & root cause analysis.

Makes independent decisions related to resources, approach, and tactical operations. Decision-making may include cross function collaboration (e.

g., Exercise independent judgement within the HSEQ Management System to solve moderately complex problems, and partner with HSEQ Directors / SME to solve high complexity problems)

  • Manages budget for their team.
  • Regularly makes recommendations on matters of significance in department and / or function.
  • Influences on HSE department objectives, resources, etc.

Deliverables & Key Performance Indicators :

  • Set Advisors’ personal performance objectives both in line with their development needs and the objectives set by the HSE department.
  • Monitor and track HSE Team of Advisors’ Goals and Objectives against measured metrics (e.g., WSP Online Reporting System timelines, travel and training budget usage, HSEQ Training completion)
