Job Description
Position : Assistant Store Manager – Airdrie Thrift Store, 1‑125 Main Street, Airdrie, AB T4B 0P7. This permanent full‑time role supports the Store Manager / Corps Officer in all operational areas of the retail store, ensuring the Salvation Army’s mission is achieved through effective store management.
Accountabilities
- Oversee safety of all customers, staff and volunteers while in the store.
- Assist with planning store layouts and ensuring store attractiveness.
- Handle customer concerns or complaints in a timely and courteous manner.
- Support cash operations according to Salvation Army policy, ensuring nightly deposits are secure.
- Oversee inventory control, retrieving, sorting and pricing store donations appropriately.
- Provide direction and support to staff in the absence of the Store Manager.
- Participate in interviews and hiring.
- Provide orientation and training; give performance management feedback for staff in compliance with Divisional and Territorial standards.
- Assist in planning store sales, promotions and auctions.
- Plan staff schedules, meetings and training sessions.
- Sort, price and stock goods.
Health and Safety
Work in compliance with the OH&S Act, regulations and the Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.Ensure staff awareness of emergency procedures and their immediate implementation.Follow proper procedures for workplace injury or illness, including incident investigations as applicable.Critical Relationship Management
Internal : Store Manager, Corps Officer(s), volunteers, staff.External : Community, external vendors.Managerial / Technical Responsibilities
Reports directly to the Store Manager. No direct reports. Supervises staff members and volunteers in the absence of the Store Manager / Corps Officer.
Financial and Material Management
Moderate material responsibilities.Regular responsibility for minor financial matters.Authorised to handle small amounts of cash.Working Conditions
Permanent full‑time position in a retail store environment.Flexibility in work schedule required; schedule varies by week and may include weekdays and / or Saturdays.Must stand for long periods with frequent twisting, bending, crouching and reaching.Ability to lift or move up to 29 pounds.Travel required to attend meetings.Education, Experience and Qualifications
Willingness to develop an understanding and support of The Salvation Army mission and values.Work in compliance with OH&S Act, regulations and health and safety policies.Education, Qualifications and Certifications
Completion of a formal post‑secondary program or specialised courses in Retail Management or equivalent.Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.Experience and Knowledge
Two (2) years of prior related retail store experience, specifically with secondhand merchandise preferred.Basic accounting experience required.Cash handling experience required.Experience with cash registers and related processes, such as bank deposits and summary reports.Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.Experience with Salvation Army–specific systems / programs is an asset.Skills and Capabilities
Team player capable of working within a compassionate, respectful, and non‑judgmental environment.Excellent organisational, interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral).Results‑driven with superior time‑management and delegation skills.Experience performing administrative tasks.Familiarity with cash handling, pricing, sorting, product display and promotion guidelines.Compensation
Target hiring range : $24.00 to $30.00 per hour, with a maximum of $35.99 per hour. Placement will be based on market conditions, internal equity and candidate experience, skills and qualifications.
