New Afton Mine
Situated 10 kilometers west of Kamloops, British Columbia, the New Afton Mine is an underground gold and copper producing site.
Kamloops is a city of 90,000 people, located 350 kilometers east of Vancouver. About the Role
Schedule : 7 days on / 7 days off, Dayshift only (after initial training period where both employees work together)
Position Reports To : Senior Surface Geotechnical Engineer
Position Overview : This is an excellent opportunity for skilled candidates to work on a leading-edge project with a world class geotechnical monitoring instrumentation network.
The position will involve collecting automated and manual instrumentation data. Responsibilities include collection of accurate field instrument readings, installation of monitoring instrumentation, management of data, and instrument and network maintenance to support permitting and operations.
The monitoring network includes inclinometers, vibrating wire and standpipe piezometers, TDRs, SAA’s, extensometers, prisms and survey monuments, Elexon Geo4sight, settlement plates / magnets, drones, InSAR and RADAR.
Approximately 75% of this job will consist of outdoor fieldwork.
Key Responsibilities
- Prioritize safe work procedures in team and solo work settings.
- Install and maintain geotechnical monitoring instrumentation (e.g. inclinometers, VWPs, TDRs, and various other
- Instrumentation)
- Regular instrument inspections, repairs, and maintenance.
- Ensure instrumentation protection and accessibility.
- Operate software platforms to upload / display monitoring data.
- Collection, download, upload, and interpretation of instrumentation data. Review data and highlight suspicious data with team.
- Scope / budget requirements for new instrumentation installations.
- Programming dataloggers and automated networks.
- Management of automated instrumentation data collection and maintenance of servers.
- Reporting support.
- Assisting with other duties as required.
Qualifications
- Degree or technical diploma in Geotechnical, Geological, Civil, or Mining Related Engineering Degree Diploma from an accredited Canadian institution or international equivalent.
- High level of safety awareness and understanding of safety procedures.
- Experience working on a large construction, mining project, or field setting considered an asset.
- Experience with installation, data collection, and monitoring of geotechnical instruments (i.e. inclinometers, piezometers, settlement plates, dataloggers, etc.).
- A basic understanding of database organization and wireless network data collection considered an asset.
- Experience with quality control / quality assurance of instrument readings, calibration, and troubleshooting.
- Ability to manipulate data in a variety of ways (including Excel), aptitude / interest to learn new software.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills, experience collaborating with a multidisciplinary team including contractors and consultants.
- Attention to detail and quality oriented.
Other Requirements
Candidates will be required to participate in a comprehensive qualification process, including :
- Successful completion of pre-placement functional movement assessment.
- Provide proof of a valid Class 5 driver’s license Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada.
- Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements.
Compensation
The salary range for this position will be between $65,000 to $95,000.
