Apply Now Posting Number : COOP -25-04 Job Type : Co-op, Temporary-Full-time, up to 4 Months, Union Salary Range : $20.43 per hour Location : Barrie, ON - Onsite (see below for more details) Posted :  Tuesday, December 17, 2024 Application Deadline : Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at 11 : 59 pm The Opportunity The Operations Department is comprised of three Branches : Administration, Parks and Forestry Operations, and Roads, Fleet and Technical Operations. Key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of the City’s public works infrastructure and systems including roadways; rail, winter maintenance; parks and green spaces, including forestry; and maintenance of the corporation’s fleet of vehicles and equipment. The Stormwater Operations component of the Section is responsible for conducting compliance related inspections, investigations of all stormwater infrastructure including stormwater management facilities, Oil and Grit Separators, Low Impact Development, Creeks and ditches as well as associated water quality monitoring of these assets. Other duties include investigating complaints and responding to public concerns of related infrastructure, work order and records management for roads, and drainage and assisting with the preparation for winter control, surface and rail operation activities. The successful applicant to this position will perform and / or assist with the following tasks :

  • Assist with inspections, investigations and evaluations of stormwater, roads and drainage infrastructure
  • Assist with ensuring compliance with Environmental Compliance Approvals and other permits (i.e. data collection, sampling and reporting);
  • Assist with water quality monitoring and infrastructure inspections of stormwater management facilities, Oil and Grit Separators, Low Impact Development, Creeks and ditches remain in accordance with the Consolidated Linear Environmental Compliance Approval;
  • Assist in winter material usage tracking and complete Environment Canada Winter Material Usage Report;
  • Assist in winter equipment calibration and act as a field liaison for the Branch to actively communicate, monitor and inspect contractor’s work;
  • Act as a field coordinator in the assigned roads and stormwater related contracts to coordinate with contractors to complete project deliverables.
  • Operate, maintain and calibrate sampling equipment;
  • Compile and maintain records of all tests, inspections, and monitoring results
  • Prepare reports and accurately document all other activities;
  • Investigate and resolve complaints related to municipal services;
  • Inputs data and other information from the field into the Cityworks (our work order management system); and
  • Conducts Stormwater Management Pond and Watercourse Inspections to ensure continued compliance with the Consolidated Linear Environmental Compliance Approval.

  • Currently enrolled in or is a student in a recognized College or University
  • preferably in an Environmental Technology / Science or closely related program, and returning to full-time studies
  • First Aid Certification
  • Minimum of 16 years of age or turning 16 by the end of the calendar year and must have attended one of the academic establishments listed above the year in which they are applying for employment and / or returning the following year Knowledge / Skill / Ability
  • Basic knowledge of construction activities related to stormwater management
  • Demonstrated field and water quality sampling knowledge and experience
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills using Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams), as well as ArcGIS and Auto CAD
  • Dependable, reliable and able to work well with minimal supervision
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
  • Possession of a valid Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) is considered an asset
  • Conditions of Employment

  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Drivers Licence in good standing
  • CSA-approved safety footwear in good condition
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
