Position Summary

As an integral member of the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre the Advanced Practice Sonographer in Congenital Heart Disease plays a key role beyond the responsibilities of a Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer. These include : Demonstrating advanced clinical knowledge skills ability and judgment to support and educate staff in the clinical environment. Maintaining comprehensive expertise in cardiac ultrasound standards particularly in adult congenital heart disease to effectively teach and mentor staff.

Duties

  • Facilitating learner development within the University Health Networks clinical department
  • Lead and design effective programs to educate staff on the echocardiographic assessment of congenital heart disease.
  • Create and maintain a structured supportive learning environment and provide guidance and mentorship to build learner clinical competence and confidence in performing echocardiograms on patients with complex congenital heart disease.
  • Perform direct patient care. Acquire cardiac ultrasound images and create preliminary reports on assigned patients including those with complex congenital cardiac anatomy and interventions.
  • Engage in academic and professional development through self-directed continuing education staying current with advancements in echocardiography maintain awareness of emerging trends and best practices which support patient care and quality.
  • Participate in initiatives which contribute to the growth and evolution of educational and clinical programs in the department particularly within the area of adult congenital heart disease.
  • Role model professionalism positive attitude and strong work values
  • Actively contribute to quality assurance and program excellence through participation in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Actively engage in research to advance clinical practice and education in adult congenital heart disease echocardiography
  • Actively contribute to quality assurance and program excellence but participating in quality improvement initiatives
  • Support the overall functioning of the Echo lab through cross-functional responsibilities and contributions to operational excellence

Qualifications :

  • At least 5 years practical and clinical experience in adult cardiac ultrasound imaging three years experience in adult congenital heart disease scanning required
  • Completion of a 2 year community college program in Echocardiography required
  • Completion of a 4 year Bachelors degree in a Health Sciences field required
  • Excellent problem recognition and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational time management conflict resolution and communication skills.
  • Effective teaching skills in the adult learner setting.
  • Registration with the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO) required
  • Registration with Sonography Canada or the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS)  required
  • Active membership with the Canadian Society of Echocardiography or the American Society of Echocardiography preferred
