The Opportunity :

WSP is currently seeking an enthusiastic, business minded Experienced Urban Planner to join our growing Calgary Studio (Landscape Architecture + Urban Design Planning, Transportation & Infrastructure). You will be part of a wide interdisciplinary team, engaged on a variety of both public and private sector projects across Western Canada. What you can expect to do here :

  • Assist in the preparation of drawings, maps, illustrations, presentations, and reports.
  • Conduct research and compile related information including municipal regulations, acts, codes of practice, as well as historical / statistical data, soil, and water well information, topography and existing land uses related to client properties.
  • Review potential clients' properties and sites to provide information to support recommendations on land use, applications, site design and approval processes.
  • Help prepare engagement materials and supporting engagement strategies, present plans to municipal and regional authorities, general public, and various stakeholders.
  • Prepare and submit application for land use, subdivisions, permits, boundary adjustments, provincial & municipal appeals.
  • Compile and analyze data, statutory policy guidelines and other factors affecting land use to support due diligence reports.
  • Conduct research, highest and best use reviews, and planning policy analysis.
  • Preparation of site plans, master plans and municipal and regional planning strategies.
  • Coordination of planning application and securing approvals.
  • Public consultation, including creation and delivery of presentation for public meetings, open houses and workshops.
  • Preparation of proposal and contracts for public and private sector clients
  • Preparation of complex comprehensive plan amendments including official community plans, zoning bylaws, area structure plans and neighborhood plans.
  • Prepare various technical reports on land use, social and economic issues.
  • Assist in preparation of proposals and other business development activities.
  • Management of projects over various interdisciplinary teams, client management and other coordination tasks streamlined to project priorities.
  • Preparation of municipal planning documents such as official plans, zoning by-laws, secondary plans and community improvement plans.
  • Assist with complex municipal planning and development projects.
  • Obtain planning and development approvals.
  • Assist in the preparation and delivery of public engagement programs.
  • Research and analyze a variety of planning topics, data, and trends such as socio-
  • demographics, housing, economic conditions, real estate, energy, resilience, and infrastructure.
  • Work effectively with urban designers on conceptual planning, design guidelines and similar design elements of planning documents.
  • Provide professional advice regarding planning policy, zoning interpretation and regulatory approvals.
  • Preparation and / or analysis of planning related policy documents, site plans, subdivisions, road closures and rezoning applications.
  • Ensure the work performed meets the requirements of the mandate, the client's expectations and the quality standards required by WSP.
  • What you'll bring to WSP :

  • Candidate should be eligible for full membership in the Alberta Institute of Planners and / or Canadian Institute of Planners;
  • Master's Degree in Planning or related discipline will be an asset;
  • At least 3 years of experience in Planning or related discipline;
  • Previous experience in a policy planning, land development, urban design and municipal planning approvals in Alberta will be beneficial;
  • Well-developed skills in urban design and working knowledge of AUTOCAD, GIS, Sketch up and / or Adobe Suite will be an asset;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; and
  • Proven time management and organizational skills.
