Steele Auto Group and the Steele Family Office are seeking a Director of Financial Reporting and Tax to join our team, on location, in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia!
As the Director of Financial Reporting and Tax, you will be responsible for overseeing the preparation, analysis, and distribution of financial reports for the group of companies.
This role requires a deep understanding of financial accounting standards. The successful candidate will ensure the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial information, while providing critical insights to support strategic decision-making and advance problem resolution.
The Director of Financial Reporting and Tax will also be responsible for overseeing the tax function for the group of companies, including compliance, structuring and planning activities.
The successful candidate will work with advisors and management to ensure tax efficiency across the group and will play a lead role in liaising with auditors in both Canada and the USA.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to :
- Lead the preparation and review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Oversee the consolidation of financial results from various subsidiaries and business units
- Lead the preparation and review of compliance reports for lenders
- Develop and maintain robust internal controls over financial reporting processes
- Coordinate with internal and external auditors to facilitate audits and address any findings
- Develop and execute tax planning strategies to minimize after-tax costs in compliance with applicable laws and regulations
- Lead the Canadian corporate income tax compliance function across the group of companies
- Lead, through collaboration with external advisors, the preparation and filing of US tax returns
- Address issues and questions as they arise from the business units about commodity taxes
- Provide detailed financial analysis and interpretations to senior management and shareholders
- Identify trends, variances, and key performance indicators to support strategic planning and decision-making
- Assist in the development of forecasts, budgets, and long-term financial plans
- Liaise with and assess performance of investment portfolio managers
- Evaluate investment opportunities including publicly traded companies and private enterprises
- Perform due diligence over potential investment opportunities.
- Continuously evaluate and improve financial reporting processes and systems
- Implement best practices and automation to enhance efficiency and accuracy
- Collaborate with IT and other departments to optimize financial systems and tools
- Manage, mentor, and develop finance team in collaboration with the Corporate Controller
- Foster a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
- Set clear goals, provide regular feedback, and support career development initiatives
The ideal candidate will possess :
- Accounting designation (CPA or equivalent) with 7+ years post-designation experience
- In-depth knowledge of GAAP
- 3+ years of Canadian tax experience, and familiarity with US tax procedures and returns
- Strong accounting, analytical and problem-solving skills
- Outstanding written and oral communications skills
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to meet tight deadlines and manage multiple priorities
- Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively with business lines and other legal and tax professionals.
- Strong project management skills
- Experience working in a multi entity organization with inter-related businesses
