Job description

The Winnipeg Folk Festival seeks a passionate and motivated individual to join our Production team, who are responsible for the planning, setup, operation, and tear down of the festival site and its two campgrounds. This position will join our existing production staff as we expand our team.

The festival site is in Birds Hill Provincial Park outside of Winnipeg. Each summer we build infrastructure to support a community of thousands of attendees spanning 200 acres.

The Production department connects with all areas of the festival, with a focus on health and safety, venue operations, inventory management, ingress and egress, and environmental initiatives.

This position will contribute to the production of the festival, with a focus on public transportation, traffic management, and the building of campground communities for thousands of campers, all with a goal to create outstanding audience experiences.

Areas of Responsibility :

Festival Operations and Procurement :

  • Participate in the planning of festival operations,
  • Conduct research and development for new initiatives and operational changes,
  • Consult with area leads and stakeholders to review and analyze departmental plans and implement changes,
  • Negotiate services contracts, obtain quotes from suppliers, research products, order items,
  • Provide leadership and supervision for seasonal production staff,
  • Contribute to administrative and HR support for hiring extended team of approximately 100 seasonal contract staff.

Festival Planning with Volunteer teams :

  • The festival works with 2400 volunteers. This position acts as the lead staff for volunteer crews as assigned : Festival Campground Safety – Access, Steward and Support, Traffic.
  • Develop operational plans, training materials, manage coordinators for these crews and deliver training to volunteers.
  • On Site Production :

  • Facilitate setup, operation and cleanup of the festival site and campgrounds with a focus on Festival Campground, Quiet Campground, and parking lots.
  • Assist with managing stakeholders, deliveries, and daily production schedule priorities.
  • Emergency and Incident Management :

  • Participate in emergency and incident planning, documentation and training.
  • In the event of an emergency during the festival, play a key role to respond with a focus on Traffic Management and Campgrounds.
  • Support crews responding to incidents during the festival.
  • Traffic Management :

  • Implement safe and efficient traffic flow procedures focusing on high volume traffic times such as Wednesday morning load in and festival egress.
  • Bus Services :

  • Coordinate charter bus services : Folk Fest Express, campground shuttle, artist and volunteer hotel shuttle and any other special charters.
  • Campground Operations :

  • Coordinate operations for the Festival Campground and Quiet Campground.
  • Act as on-site contact for campground services, including harm reduction partners, vendors and other stakeholders.
  • Other Duties :

    All staff at the Winnipeg Folk Festival are expected to contribute throughout the year to the operation of the office, including dealing with public, volunteers, and where necessary to support the overall process of festival organization, set-up and tear-down.

    Qualifications :

  • Production experience for other festivals, films, or major public events
  • Project management skills / training
  • Valid Manitoba driver’s license
  • Assets :

  • Experience as an attendee, volunteer or contract staff at the festival
  • Experience in training delivery and facilitation
  • Experience with Office 365 and a variety of software
  • Creative and resourceful problem solver
  • Commitment to continual learning and improvement

  • Strong communication skills (written & verbal)
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure and with a wide variety of colleagues, suppliers, vendors, and volunteers
  • Work Schedule :

    The hours of work generally fall between 9 am and 5 pm, Monday to Friday, a 35- hour week with an unpaid lunch. There is a need for schedule flexibility related to evening and weekend events, training sessions and meetings with volunteers.

    During the weeks leading up to and during the festival, the selected candidate will be required to work long hours in an outdoor environment.

    Compensation :

    Salary range is $50,000-59,000 with an excellent benefit plan and flexible team environment.
