The Government of Saskatchewan is seeking candidates for the position of Chief Legislative Crown Counsel in the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General.
The Legislative Drafting Branch provides legislative drafting advice and services to ministries, Crown corporations and agencies of the Government of Saskatchewan.
The Branch also provides advice respecting statutory interpretation issues, works with the courts to prepare rules of court and is responsible for overseeing the printing of Government Bills for introduction to the Legislative Assembly.
In addition, the Branch sits as advisor to the Cabinet Committee on Government Operations and the Red-Tape Reduction Committee of Cabinet and works closely with Cabinet Secretariat, the Government House Business and Research Office and the Legislative Assembly’s Law Clerk.
As Chief Legislative Crown Counsel you will be asked to provide strategic vision, leadership and guidance to the Branch.
You will lead by example as you provide guidance and support to the lawyers and support staff in the office. The position reports to the Legal Executive Director of the Public Law Division.
You will be expected to exercise good judgment, discretion, tact and diplomacy in working with colleagues within the ministry and in dealing with other Government offices and external contacts.
You must have the ability to work concurrently on multiple assignments, to meet deadlines and to keep clients and senior Government officials informed of the progress of drafting assignments in the Branch.
In addition, you will have excellent oral and written communication skills and proven analytical skills. As well, you will show yourself to be a self-starter with the ability to work individually and in a team environment.
You must have membership, or qualify for membership, in the Law Society of Saskatchewan. As well you should have at least 10 years of drafting experience and an understanding of the principles of statutory interpretation, administrative law, Parliamentary procedure and Public Sector governance.
As well, you must have experience in dealing with senior members of Government.
