As a Senior Mines Inspector, each month will bring new discoveries by spending a week exploring and inspecting remote mining sites, with all expenses covered—comfortable accommodations and gourmet meals. The rest of the time, you’ll be based in Iqaluit, playing a crucial role in ensuring that mining operations comply with strict health and safety regulations. Mastery of the Mine Health and Safety Act and Regulations, as well as the Explosive Use Act and Regulations, is crucial for this role to maintain the highest standards of safety and compliance. Responsibilities :

  • Collaborate with stakeholders through consultation and providing resources and guidance.
  • Conduct design reviews for approval by the Chief Mines Inspector / Chief Safety Officer, including mine design to assess ground stability, design of waste dumps and surface impoundments, including stability of slopes, mechanical equipment design and mobile equipment system designs and reviews “Safety plans” and “Work plans” submitted by exploration companies.
  • Inspect surface and underground mines to assess compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Acts and Regulations.
  • Inspect exploration camps and ice roads servicing the mineral industry to ensure compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Acts and Regulations.
  • Issue orders to the mine manager to comply when the work site is not operating in accordance with the Mine Health and Safety Acts or Regulations.
  • Meet with mine management and safety committees to discuss safety issues in the workplace.
  • Investigate incidents that have caused loss of life, property damage, or injuries.
  • Suspend or cancel a supervisor, shift boss, blasting or hoist operator certificate when warranted.
  • Investigate work refusals and discrimination cases as directed by the Deputy Chief Safety Officer.
  • Prepare and provides written reports of investigations to the Deputy Chief Safety Officer.
  • Recommend charges and prosecutions arising from investigations of non-compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Acts and Regulations.
  • Testify or act as an expert witness in court for cases of non-compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Acts and Regulations.

  • Requirements :

  • Possess a valid class 5 driver’s licence to ensure unrestricted mobility and access to diverse work sites.
  • Master the Mine Health and Safety Act and Regulations, as well as the Explosive Use Act and Regulations, to ensure comprehensive compliance and safety.
  • Showcase expertise in safety management systems, audits, and inspections, with a deep understanding of workplace inspections, OH&S committees, personal protective equipment, and emergency protocols.
  • Leverage advanced knowledge of mining practices and technology to optimize operations and enhance safety.
  • Utilize proficiency in computer software, including word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation tools, to manage data and communicate effectively.

  • Salary : Between $118,000 and $125,000 per year, based on experience, plus an annual Northern Living Allowance of $2,100.
