Start Date : November 2024

Placement Length : 6 months with the possibility of extension

Language Requirements : English Level 5-Fluent

The Volunteer’s Role

If you are passionate about helping organizations in Institutional capacity development and enhance organizational contribution in Gender and Social Development, this is the role for you.

As a Gender and Social Development Associate, you will be working with Global Green Growth Institute, GGGI based in the African Union along with their team in Addis Ababa Ethiopia in leading and formulating partnerships and networks to achieve and disseminate results.

In this role, you will support GGGI Ethiopia, moving into a period of recovery from COVID 19 pandemic, there is now an opportunity to reset traditional approaches to economic development, and shift towards greener, more sustainable initiatives. To guide this shift across the African continent, the African Union developed the Green Recovery Action Plan (GRAP) which provides a framework for sustainable economic recovery from the pandemic.

The ultimate outcome of the Project is enhanced impact on the economic and climate resilience of the African population, in particular women and youth, post COVID-19.

As a volunteer, you will :

  • Contribute to ensuring mainstreaming of gender, poverty reduction and social inclusion in GGGI sector and thematic policies, strategies, and operational plans.
  • Support the design and monitoring of program results as they relate to gender and social development outcomes and outputs.
  • Support the preparation of selective country gender and social development analysis and assessments.
  • Support the incorporation of environmental and social safeguards into the project cycle management.
  • Analyze and prepare knowledge products and services on social development and gender issues of importance, such as studies on current and emerging issues, operational tools (sector checklists and toolkits), and best practices.
  • Support the design capacity development / training materials and programs for staff and government partners.
  • Support the identification and build institutional partnerships and champions in government, private sector, and civil society to strengthen.
  • Support the development of strategies for mobilizing gender-responsive and inclusive, sustainable green finance.

Essential Requirements :

  • MBA or Masters in Gender Studies, Sociology / Anthropology / Social Development, International / Development / Affairs, Public Policy, Economics, Human Rights or other social science preferably involving gender studies.
  • Essential Background :

  • At least 3-5 years of relevant experience in gender equality and social development of which 2 years at international level.
  • Substantial experience in design, monitoring and evaluation of gender projects.
  • Experience working directly with one or more departments of multilateral or bilateral development institutions in developing countries is important.
  • Proven experience and expertise with environmental and social safeguards.

    Project - Sharing Canadian Expertise for Inclusive Development and Gender Equality (SHARE)

    Cuso International will deliver the Sharing Canadian Expertise for Inclusive Development and Gender Equality (SHARE) project, with a contribution from Global Affairs Canada (GAC) over seven years (2020-2027). SHARE aims to improve the economic and / or social well-being of the poorest, most marginalized and vulnerable people, particularly women and girls, in developing countries, to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals. In addition to increasing the engagement of Canadians in international development and key global issues, this project will aim to increase the performance of country partners to deliver more inclusive, innovative and environmentally sustainable development initiatives that advance gender equality, in support of the action areas of Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy.

    Partner - Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI)

    GGGI has been working in Ethiopia since 2010, supporting the Government of Ethiopia’s efforts in the development and implementation of a Climate Resilient Green Economy (CRGE) Strategy. This involves collaborating toward the delivery of Ethiopia’s vision of becoming a climate-resilient middle-income economy by 2030, with a zero-net increase in carbon emissions. Additionally, the aim is to facilitate key systemic transformations in the economy and generate innovative ideas towards a climate resilient green economy.
