Position Summary
A full time opportunity for a Psychiatrist in our inpatient Women’s Trauma and Concurrent Program starting July 2024. The Women’s Trauma & Concurrent program is one of the first of its kind in Canada - a groundbreaking initiative offering intensive treatment tailored specifically for women
- with complex trauma. This new program further integrates care for co-occurring substance use disorders (where required), providing a fully comprehensive approach to treatment. This position is within our elective Homewood Specialized Services delivering evidence-based treatments and superior treatment outcomes. This program is delivered on-site at the Homewood Health Centre in Guelph, in a collaborative manner, with a supportive interdisciplinary team, which includes nurses, registered psychotherapists, nurse practitioners, occupational therapists, recreational therapists, music therapists and horticulture therapists. In this role, you will be responsible for the psychiatric care of patients as they engage in their recovery journey. This position is open to persons of all genders.

Program Highlights :
Nine-week intensive inpatient program addressing traumatic stress injuries, including PTSD, with or without concurrent substance use disorders.Gender-specific environment fostering safety and connection among co-patients.Specialized treatment led by an experienced clinical team of all genders, including assessment, stabilization, skills development, trauma processing using Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and discharge planning.Weekly 1 : 1 physician sessions and regular 1 : 1 sessions with a therapist (approximately twice / week)Group programming featuring dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), substance use recovery processing and relapse prevention, as required.Holistic care approach addressing physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of healing.If you are looking for a work environment where your colleagues are collegial and supportive, working hours are reasonable and predictable, and call requirements are minimal, this is the place for you!
What you’ll be doing :
Clinically responsible for assigned patients including admission, assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, monitoring, referral, daily care, and discharge.Clinical care includes diagnosis and management of psychiatric disorders, medication management, referral to the Interventional Psychiatry Service (ECT, rTMS, Ketamine infusion) when appropriateProvide ongoing supervision and management of care including weekly individual assessments with the patient to ensure ongoing standards of patient care are metCollaborate with other physicians, nurses and allied health professionals in providing optimal patient care within an interdisciplinary teamComplete documentation including admission history, mental status, diagnostic impression, treatment plan, weekly progress notes and finally, a comprehensive discharge summary of the highest quality to ensure the medical record is meaningful and useful and a treatment plan can be established by the teamUtilize electronic medical platforms such as Caseworks and BDM (training provided)Provide clinical guidance to the program and to the admitting department for appropriate and timely referrals and admissionsEnsure best practice standards of clinical care are implemented and maintainedSupport colleagues with patient coverage during physician absences (with NP support)Complete and submit OHIP billings in a timely mannerAbility to provide ECT treatment to patients at the Homewood Health Centre approximately once per month is an assetLiaison with third party referrers as needed for continuity of care (VAC, WSIB)What we are looking for :
A specialist certification in Psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent body acceptable to the Royal College and in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO)Experience with diagnosis and management of complex psychiatric disorders and comorbid mental health and substance use disorders is preferredInterest to work with complex and comorbid disorders as well as ongoing learning and teaching to continually enhance patient careAdept at creating an environment that supports team spirit and collaboration across the organizationInspire others to be accountable through action, decisions and / or communicationStrong ability to create exceptional relationships with clients, patients, customers, and colleaguesStrong ability to negotiate and influence with proven critical thinking, analysis and complex problem solving skillsExcellent verbal and written communication skillsHighly developed organizational and time-management skillsDemonstrated commitment to infection prevention and control needs of the hospitalWorking knowledge of Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and the principles of trauma-informed care are welcomed assetsAs part of our commitment to the health and safety of our patients, staff and community from COVID-19, subject to any accommodation required by applicable human rights legislation, Homewood Health Centre requires that all staff have received all required doses of a COVID-19 vaccine approved by Health Canada.
