WHO WE NEED The Indigenous Community Coordinator will play a critical role in strengthening and expanding ROM’s relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations, and leaders across Ontario, with a special focus on communities surrounding the museum.

This role is designed for an Indigenous person who brings deep connections to Indigenous communities and extensive experience in public program development, community engagement, and cultural consultation.

Reporting to the Manager of Indigenous Learning & Programs, the Indigenous Community Coordinator will lead the development of meaningful collaborations, organize community events and activations, and support ROM’s ongoing commitment to Indigenous engagement.

This role is a unique opportunity to cultivate dialogue, amplify Indigenous voices, and support shaping the future of Indigenous programming at ROM.

The ideal candidate is a skilled relationship-builder with experience in event planning, consultation, and community programming.

They will work closely with Indigenous knowledge holders, communities, artists, and leaders, ensuring that initiatives at ROM reflect Indigenous priorities, traditions, and ways of knowing, being and doing.

HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT Build and strengthen relationships with Indigenous organizations, communities, artists, and leaders across Ontario, ensuring programs at ROM are informed by Indigenous perspectives and needs.

Coordinate and lead community engagement initiatives, ensuring Indigenous voices are represented and valued in programming at ROM.

Plan and execute at least two (2) major community gatherings and activations per year at ROM, incorporating cultural exchanges, performances, feasts, art-making demonstrations, and collaborations with Indigenous artists and educators.

Develop and maintain a database of Indigenous community contacts, organizations, artists, and leaders to support ongoing engagement and future collaborations.

Represent the Indigenous Learning and Programs team at ROM at external events, meetings, and forums, nurturing meaningful partnerships and advocating for the inclusion of Indigenous perspectives in museum initiatives.

Facilitate Indigenous-led community consultations to ensure that programming at the ROM aligns with Indigenous priorities and cultural protocols.

Collaborate with internal departments at ROM, including curatorial, public programming, and education teams, to integrate Indigenous knowledges and expertise into museum initiatives.

Ensure cultural sensitivity and accessibility in all programming, creating welcoming spaces for Indigenous communities to engage with ROM.

Support program evaluation efforts, gathering community feedback to assess the impact of Indigenous programming and refine future initiatives.

Manage budgets and logistics for Indigenous community events and outreach activities, ensuring resources are allocated effectively.

WHAT YOU BRING Indigenous identity and deep connections to Indigenous communities in Ontario, with a strong understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and protocols.

A Bachelor’s degree in Indigenous Studies, Community Development, Event Management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Indigenous education-related credentials would be an asset.

A minimum of three (3) years of experience in community engagement, program development, or event planning, focusing on Indigenous-led initiatives and relationship-building.

Proven experience facilitating community consultations, dialogues, and co-creation processes, ensuring Indigenous perspectives shape programming and institutional decision-making.

Demonstrated ability to plan and execute culturally sensitive events, including managing logistics, outreach, and partnerships with Indigenous artists, Elders, and leaders.

Strong leadership and networking skills, with experience engaging diverse Indigenous stakeholders and cultivating and nurturing long-term collaborations.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present ideas, facilitate discussions, and represent ROM in Indigenous and museum-sector spaces.

Experience in project management and problem-solving, with the ability to balance multiple tasks, work independently, and adapt to evolving community needs.

A commitment to advancing Indigenous self-determination and representation in cultural institutions, ensuring Indigenous voices are prioritized and respected.

Familiarity with database creation and relationship management tools, with an ability to track and maintain engagement with Indigenous communities and partners.

Oral and written fluency in French is considered an asset.

Driver's license is considered an asset.
