What will you be doing!

  • Ensuring the Waste Characterization Services team is appropriately trained according to CNL's training requirements and the department's Training Plan and that those qualifications are maintained up to date.
  • Ensuring the department operates in a professional and respectful manner, adhering to the company’s Code of Conduct and upholding the company values in all of its daily activities.
  • Ensuring safety issues are raised, reported, and addressed promptly by the team, documented according to company process, and reported to line management within the required timelines.
  • Rewarding safe work execution and employee actions that demonstrate a commitment to safety and providing coaching where concerns are noted or unsafe actions are observed or reported.
  • Ensuring Waste Characterization Services operations are conducted in compliance with the associated governing policies and procedures as defined in the Waste Management Program Requirements and Program Description Documents as well as all associated industry regulations.
  • Providing guidance and input in the development of sampling and analysis plans, the interpretation of analytical data, and / or selection of appropriate methodologies for waste characterization.
  • Investigating challenges with waste characterization execution and resolving barriers and gaps identified in the processes.
  • Completing technical reviews of the Waste Characterization Sampling and Analysis Plans, Reports, and Consignment Memos.
  • Representing the department in client meetings, project initiation meetings, etc. and providing Subject Matter input into the development of new project plans.
  • Reviewing and providing input into commercial proposals including commenting on the department’s ability to support and / or making recommendations on proposals being developed for commercial opportunities.
  • Working in conjunction with the Waste Characterization leadership team (Manager, other section leads, supervisors) and waste generators to strategically plan and resource effectively to support the organization’s waste characterization needs.
  • Managing customer satisfaction by ensuring that requests for characterization are processed promptly and is a key interface with Waste Generator customers on support needs.
  • Monitoring and reporting on system health through developing and managing system metrics.
  • Overseeing the implementation of an asset management system for department assets, particularly field instruments.
  • Providing people management support, encouraging the development of personal goals and objectives, addressing issues of performance management, coaching, mentoring, completing timecard approvals and performance appraisals, and reviewing and pre-approving expense requests.
  • Reporting on progress, challenges, and opportunities to the Waste Characterization Manager while planning and delivering optimization and efficiencies in the team's operation to provide efficient and effective service to waste generators.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for :

  • Education
  • Honours Bachelor Degree in Engineering or Science from a University of recognized standing OR membership in an Engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization OR Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology (college diploma) earned through a combination of education and relevant experience in the field of radioactive waste characterization.

  • Experience
  • Demonstrated leadership of a technical team.

  • Experience working directly with instrumentation related to radiological or hazardous component analysis or experience analyzing and interpreting data from such instruments.
  • Background in waste characterization and / or waste management is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Clear and effective communication, both verbal and written.

  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively with personnel of various disciplines.
  • Understanding and troubleshooting technical problems routed in nuclear physics and chemistry.
  • Navigating difficult conversations both outward-facing (e.g. Handling difficult customer interactions) and internal (e.g. Performance management).
  • Evaluating and setting priorities based on customer demand and operational needs.
  • Operating within a prescribed budget and plan maintenance and operational activities within the prescribed time and budget.
  • Knowledge of :
  • Industrial operations, safety codes, and best practices.

  • Regulations related to Nuclear and Hazardous Waste Management, including but not limited to CSA N292.0; CSA N292.5; CSA N292.8.
  • Chalk River Waste Management Facilities Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC).
  • Waste Management Process (900-508600-MCP-004).
  • Radiation Protection Program.
  • Nuclear Criticality Safety Requirements and Practices.
  • Quality Assurance.
  • International codes and practices applicable to radioactive waste management are desirable.
  • MASSIM and MARSAME programs are considered an asset.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
  • Level 2 Secret requires a minimum of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and / or the United Kingdom . CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

    Working Conditions :

  • Position is largely oversight and knowledge based and does not require significant physical demand however establishing good ergonomic and movement habits will help reduce strain during long periods of desk based work.
  • Combination of work based in the office as well as field-based work. Characterization work can happen both indoors and outdoors.
  • Walking is required for field visits. Field work may involve exposure to short-term periods of elevated noise, differing warm and cold conditions, and exposure to another external stimulus (stairs, large groups of people, etc).
  • Travel to CNL’s other sites is required periodically.
  • 4-day work week, 10-hour shifts.
