Job description

Veolia is looking for an Operations Superintendent to join the team managing the Anaerobic Digestion plant in North York. The plant processes source separated organic waste (SSO) to produce biogas and composting material. The process is based on mechanical pre-treatment of the SSO followed by biological treatment of organic slurry (AD) and wastewater (MBR).

Main Responsibilities :

Main duties of the Operations Superintendent are, but not limited to :

  • Gain deep understanding of all plant processes (AD, MBR, etc.), operations, equipment (centrifuges, presses, compressors, pumps, etc.), technologies and facility drawings to :
  • Optimize the performance of the plant
  • Lead the operations teams
  • Develop operational expertise of the team
  • Produce relevant operational documents
  • Promote and build a safety culture
  • Direct the operations teams in the performance of their day-to-day activities;
  • Organize the operational tasks and allocate them to the relevant teams;
  • Oversee the effective operation of the plant in accordance with the safety and production requirements;
  • Ensure the documents relating to the works (safety documentation, daily report, logbook, etc.) are correctly completed by the operators;
  • Take control of the distribution of tasks to manage holidays and / or absences;
  • Maintain recognition and discipline for all direct reports
  • Collaborate with the maintenance manager and maintenance team to ensure all required proactive and corrective maintenance are carried out in a timely manner.
  • Prepare and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and other operational documents
  • Develop and maintain operators' training and competencies on the plant operations
  • Prepare different reports for the attention of the Plant Manager;
  • Is capable of troubleshooting the plant when not operating at the expected level
  • Recommend process optimization
  • Is responsible for leading the Management of Change (MoC) processes
  • Participate in the investigation of work-related accidents;
  • All other related tasks.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience :

  • Minimum 5 years experience in the fields of anaerobic digestion / biogas or wastewater treatment.
  • Technical certifications and / or diploma in operations or engineering;
  • 3 to 5 years' experience in a similar position;
  • Relevant experience in managing personnel;
  • Ability to work as part of a team;
  • Autonomy;
  • Customer oriented;
  • Good time management skills;
  • Good communication skills;
  • Demonstrate integrity, reliability and leadership;
  • Be proactive, organized, rigorous and resourceful;
  • Focus on results and human skills;
  • Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel and PowerPoint, Google Suite. (asset)
  • Work Environment :

    Permanent position, offered on a full-time basis from Monday to Friday. Incumbent must show flexibility in times of higher demand.

    The job holder spends around 85% to 90% of their time supervising the personnel and guaranteeing customer satisfaction, while the rest of their time (10% to 15%) is spent updating files / reports / documents and preparing reports for their manager.
