Position Summary

The Associate Dean is a member of the decanal administrative team supporting the programs, activities, and work of the Dean in the Faculty of Health and Human Services.

Under the direction of the Dean, and working with faculty, staff and community committees, the Associate Dean is accountable for functional tasks and responsibility areas identified by the Dean including, but not limited to, academic planning and implementation, budget development and monitoring;

program development, approval, and recognition / review processes; and management functions that facilitate successful working relationships with faculty, staff, communities, and college administration.

The Associate Dean assists the Dean and Department Chairs to develop new initiatives for students and faculty.

Student and program success is fostered through the support provided by the Associate Dean. This involves working with other institutional areas including Student Affairs by initiating new strategies for student engagement and managing student concerns, complaints, and appeals as delegated by the Dean.

  • Championing and Adapting to Change Duties & Responsibilities 1. EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT

1.1. Provides educational and administrative leadership to implement the overall mission, vision, and values of the Faculty.

Engages in proactive consultation and collaboration with faculty, staff and other administrators to ensure the strategic and operational goals are developed and achieved.

Advocates and promotes each program and the value they bring to the Faculty, both internally and externally.

1.2. Fosters and supports student satisfaction with programs, program delivery and the quality of instruction. Supports current student activities and initiates new strategies to encourage and further develop student engagement.

1.3. As delegated by the Dean ensures consistent application and compliance with College student policies and processing of complaints, investigations, and the appropriate course of action and sanction in all cases of student discipline, except student suspension and expulsion.

In the latter cases, advises and makes recommendations to the Dean for review.

1.4. Works in support of the Dean and as acting Dean when required, including Chairing the Dean’s Advisory Committee, attending Senior Education Team, and when required Senior Leadership Planning.

1.5. Provides administrative lead and oversight on behalf of the Dean’s office for external program recognition, accreditation, and approval processes.

1.6. Supports the Dean in regular reviews of educational programs and the development of educational policy.

1.7. Initiates, provides support, and manages processes for viable cost recovery programming activity. Provides budget development and management support to the Dean and Faculty as needed.

1.8. Manages assigned capital budgets including planning, implementation, and monitoring (i.e., lab equipment, renovation projects) in consultation with appropriate staff and faculty members.

1.9. Stewards the work of the Chairs and Dean’s Assistant in areas of program admission, timetabling, and space utilization within the Faculty.

1.10. In collaboration with the Dean and Department Chairs, establishes and implements multiyear plans, strategic plans, and communicates to faculty and staff institutional directives and organizational changes.

1.11. Initiates and supports programs for teaching excellence within the Faculty; fosters interdepartmental education and collaboration.

1.12. Works with the Dean and departments to plan and implement new programs, including report writing, proposal writing, budget projections, and reviews.

1.13. Supports the Dean and takes a leadership role in the exploration and initiation of international education opportunities.

1.14. Represents the Dean, and Faculty, as required.

2. MANAGEMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES

2.1. Promotes and encourages teamwork and consults with and supports faculty and staff. Creates a learner-centered environment and encourages faculty to innovate in the development of both curriculum and programming, learning, and teaching.

2.2. Participates on and / or chairs faculty recruitment / search committees as needed.

2.3. Supports the recruitment, orientation, coaching and supervision of faculty and staff in collaboration with the Dean and Chairs.

3. INTERNAL LIAISON

3.1. Develops and maintains effective working relationships with Chairs and faculty on a regular basis and with faculty programs, and supports the Chairs and faculty in the performance of their responsibilities.

3.2. Develops and fosters relationships with advisory committees, and other internal College committees, to inform current and future programming requirements and promote programs.

3.3. Works with various internal and external individuals and groups to plan, implement, monitor and evaluate contract activity to complement existing activities in the Faculty that furthers the goals of the Faculty and contributes to research and scholarly activity.

4. FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

4.1. Develops feasibility studies for new Health and Human Service programming. Ensures adequate consultation with all internal NIC community members.

4.2. Monitors enrolments and with input from Chairs, makes recommendations to the Dean to optimize enrolments and ensure program viability and fiscal sustainability.

4.3. Develops feasibility studies and business cases for new cost-recovery program development initiatives to ensure programs will be viable from a quality and financial sustainability perspective.

Required Education & Experience - Master’s degree in a relevant discipline.

Five years of progressive academic leadership and management experience in the Canadian post-secondary education sector (i.

e. as department chair or related activity)- At least five years exemplary post-secondary teaching or educational development experience within the last 10 years, preferably within the disciplines of Health and Human Services.

  • Demonstrated experience with proposal writing and small-scale research activity, including budget development, and contract implementation.
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience in program development and / or curriculum development within a post-secondary context.
  • Demonstrated commitment to institution wide objectives, policies and initiatives and integration of same within leadership and / or educational activities- Experience with program approval and review / recognition processes (i.

e. accreditation, quality assurance) as well as associated report writing and site visit coordination.

Completed doctoral degree preferred. Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities 1. Ability to create, maintain and support a positive, learner centered work environment.

10. Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills.

11. Demonstrated understanding and capability in the management of student issues related to the teaching / learning environment, course policies and procedures, academic conduct, and behavioural conduct.
