Position Title: Assistant, Nursing

Reports To: Camp Nurse

Scope and Summary of Primary Responsibilities

The Assistant, Nursing will support the work of the Camp Nurse in overseeing and supporting the health and wellbeing of our guests, staff and volunteers and in the implementation of the healthcare strategy. In addition to assisting our guests with their daily healthcare needs, the Nursing Assistant will pay specific focus on ensuring the special dietary needs of our guests and staff are met by the kitchen during mealtimes. When the schedule allows, there may also be an opportunity to assist with program facilitation.

Essential Functions

• Support the Camp Nurse in the execution of the healthcare plan and strategy.
• Provide complete first-aid services to all guests, volunteers and staff, and document all first-aid that is provided.
• Assist with the health screening of all guests, volunteers and staff.
• Under the guidance of the Camp Nurse, support guests with medication administration, as needed.
• Organize transportation to local area hospital, if required, by contacting EMS or leadership team.
• Assist with documentation and filing of medical records and personal information in adherence to Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004 (PHIPA) and other applicable privacy laws and policies.
• Maintain, keep record and ensure that all first-aid kits are stocked and in place around site, in vehicles and with staff.
• Track wellness supply inventory and inform Camp Nurse when wellness supplies need re-ordering or replenishing.
• Ensure all dietary needs for guests are communicated to the kitchen two weeks in advance; coordinate all special diets with the kitchen team.
• Assist guests by taking an active role in all dining room duties, including serving meals, meal set up and clean up, and ensuring that all dietary meals are provided to the correct guests.
• Assist guests with activities of daily living and minimal personal care.
• On a rotational basis, be on call for emergencies, which includes being present on site and able to respond to emergencies.
• Promote health and safety practices which include sun and heat safety measures, including that there are water/hydration stations for guests and staff throughout the day.
• Provide support, guidance and leadership to volunteers, guests, and visitors.
• Work as a team member, taking on other areas of responsibility as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

• Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C, CPR-BLS (HCP) preferred.
• Current and clear Drivers Abstract and G license an asset.
• Self-directed & motivated, with excellent interpersonal skills, patience and empathy.
• Experience working with people with vision loss, deaf-blind and/or special needs is an asset.
• Current (within 6 months of start date) Vulnerable Sector Police Record Check.
• Ability to work flexible hours in a changing and busy environment and work outside for extended period of time.
• Must reside at CNIB Lake Joe during operational season and be willing to share accommodations with other staff members if required.

Experience and Education

• Pursuing post-secondary education in Nursing or related field.

Work Environment

• This position may require the ability to work occasional overtime/flex time.
• This position may have to deal with challenging situations and/or people.
• Ability to work flexible hours in a dynamic and busy environment, with frequent interruptions.
• Must reside at CNIB Lake Joe during operational season and be willing to share accommodations with other staff member.
