Job Summary
The Junior Product Designer supports the design and development of new products and assists with the modification and customization of existing products to meet specific customer requirements. This role provides technical support across departments and contributes to manufacturing documentation, including drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and order requirements, in alignment with the Hörmann Barrie order process. The Junior Product Designer plays an active role in continuous improvement initiatives while developing technical and professional skills in a collaborative engineering environment. Note - This role is a 1 year contract.
Key Responsibilities
Support strategic planning and continuous improvement initiatives at Hörmann Barrie
Assist in ensuring all orders are processed according to established order process flowcharts
Participate in the selection, development, and engineering of new products
Assist in customizing existing products to meet customer application requirements
Develop, update, and reconfigure product drawings, specifications, and BOMs
Support BOM costing and documentation, including the use of VBA tools where applicable
Assist in defining product design parameters through testing, calculations, and analysis
Support the maintenance of DFMEA and PFMEA documentation
Assist with linear FEA analysis and review reports to support design decisions
Collaborate with sales and customers to help resolve technical product needs
Provide mechanical and electrical technical support to internal teams, customers, and installation technicians, including travel when required
Assist in generating manufacturing and order documentation for door and parts orders
Perform other duties as assigned to support business and department needs
Health & Safety Responsibilities
Comply with the Occupational Health & Safety Act, including worker duties under Section 28
Follow all company health and safety rules, regulations, and procedures
Adhere to established safety, quality, environmental, and housekeeping standards
Report hazards, near misses, incidents, defects, or compliance issues promptly
Participate in investigations and provide input on corrective actions
Uphold workplace violence and harassment prevention policies (Bill 168)
Attend required Environmental Health and Safety training
Understand and exercise the right to refuse unsafe work
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Ability to work independently with guidance and achieve results within established procedures
Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn project and task management tools
Ability to manage multiple priorities with attention to detail
Basic understanding of validation and product testing methods
Proficiency in Microsoft Office; working knowledge of AutoCAD and SolidWorks
Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical drawings
Understanding of machining methods and manufacturing processes
Basic exposure to FEA concepts and report interpretation
Willingness to travel and work overtime as required
Education & Experience Requirements
Post-secondary education in a related technical, engineering, or design field required
Engineering designation or progress toward designation considered an asset
Minimum of 2 years of related work or co-op experience preferred
Experience in a manufacturing environment and exposure to ERP systems is an asset
