Detailed Overview

Coordinates the day-to-day speech language pathology operations and technical functions for Public Health Speech Language Pathology Program; supervises Speech Language Pathologists and Speech Language Assistants who work at various locations within Fraser Health by preparing and adjusting work schedules, facilitating resolutions, and providing clinical guidance and advice; provides clinical services to clients in collaboration with members of the interdisciplinary team to determine optimal treatment plan and participates on interdisciplinary/interdepartmental and professional committees to advocate for the goals and objectives of Public Health in accordance with speech language pathology standards and scope of clinical practice; ensures speech language pathology staff receive required training for the orientation and/or supervision of students and participates in student education and/or evaluations as required; provides education and in-service training to community agencies, patients, families, and members of the interdisciplinary team as requested; collaborates with the Manager to address disciplinary issues and recruit and select new staff, prepare budget information, and develop and maintain statistical data; plans new and/or existing programs and reviews and develops Public Health service policies, procedures, and quality standards and/or activities related to speech language pathology clinical practice; participates on interdisciplinary, interagency, and intersectoral program meetings, develops research programs, and maintains knowledge of current developments in speech language pathology services. Responsibilities Establishes, implements, and evaluates the speech language pathology objectives, policies, procedures, and annual department plan to meet goals and objectives as identified by the Manager. Coordinates the day-to-day speech language pathology activities for Public Health to ensure optimal use of resources and efficient use of department staff by preparing staff work schedules, adjusting schedules according to workload, facilitating resolutions to work problems, providing clinical guidance and advice, and collaborating with the speech language pathology leaders as required. Provides clinical services to clients as assigned by assessing and identifying problems, formulating goals, planning and implementing treatment plan for individuals and groups and collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team to determine optimal treatment plan. Supervises designated staff by interviewing, selecting, orientating, disciplining, directing, and carrying out performance evaluations of departmental personnel and organizing in-service education programs. Processes grievances in consultation with Union Officers, Human Resources and the Manager. Manages other staff functions such as work schedules, approval of vacation, and leave of absence requests. Participates on interdisciplinary/interdepartmental and professional committees and client conferences by attending meetings, providing input, and communicating needs and concerns related to issues including processes, equipment, patient care, quality, and workload. Collaborates with members of the interdisciplinary team to facilitate the resolution of issues and advocates for the goals and objectives of Public Health in accordance with speech language pathology standards and scope of clinical practice. Plans new and/or existing patient programs by identifying service needs requiring improvement/advancement, providing input to the Manager, collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team for feedback, making recommendations, and assisting the Manager in evaluating and implementing these services. Reviews and develops Public Health policies, procedures, quality standards, and/or activities related to speech language pathology clinical practice by identifying service needs, communicating with members of the interdisciplinary team for feedback, evaluating the results in collaboration with other Clinical Practice Leaders, maintaining manuals, and advising staff members of revisions/additions as required. Promotes quality management activities for Public Health related to speech language pathology clinical practice by monitoring and evaluating effect of changes in client care practice and generating recommendations for alternative approaches, in collaboration with members of the interdisciplinary team. Recommends changes to selected policies, procedures, treatment guidelines, and protocols to the Manager. Provides education and in-service training to community agencies, patients, families, and members of the interdisciplinary team, as requested, by researching topics, preparing documentation, and presenting material to facilitate achievement of treatment goals. Attends/participates in departmental, hospital, and/or regions' educational programs as required. Maintains knowledge of current developments in evidence based speech language pathology practice by reviewing relevant literature, consulting with other professionals, attending relevant education programs, and recommending new/changed applications to the Manager to enhance the delivery of client care. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education and Experience Master's Degree in Speech Language Pathology from an approved educational institution. Three years related clinical experience in Speech-Language Pathology including a minimum of one year in a supervisory or leadership capacity or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Current active registration with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC and certification in applicable advanced competency. Eligible for membership in the Canadian and/or BC Association of Speech/Language Pathology and Audiology (CASLPA and/or BCSLPA). Skills and Abilities Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective communication with children, families, staff members, and representatives from community agencies. Demonstrated ability to establish priorities and organize workload. Demonstrated ability to supervise and provide support to others. Demonstrated ability to organize and conduct workshops and seminars on hearing and communication disorders. Demonstrated leadership abilities. Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment. Physical ability to perform duties of the position.
