Thompson Construction Group is seeking an experienced Senior Project Manager to lead and oversee large-scale civil construction and earthworks projects. This role is responsible for the full lifecycle of complex projects or a portfolio of projects, ensuring safe execution, strong financial performance, and successful delivery aligned with company and client expectations.
Reporting to the Director of Operations leadership, the Senior Project Manager provides strategic leadership to project teams, acts as the primary client interface, and plays a key role in driving operational excellence, risk management, and continuous improvement across projects.
This position requires a strong on-site presence in the Fort McMurray region. Local candidates are preferred; however, FIFO arrangements may be available.
Key Responsibilities
Safety, Quality and Compliance (EHS)
- Champion a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with all safety policies, regulations, and client requirements
- Lead development and execution of Project-Specific Safety Plans
- Ensure environmental, health, and safety considerations are integrated into all project phases
- Monitor and report on safety performance and key indicators
- Ensure quality control processes are implemented and maintained, including QA/QC plans and inspection test plans
- Review incidents, implement corrective actions, and support continuous improvement
- Lead aspects of technical quality plans and engineering for projects, including overseeing development and execution of Quality Management Plans, Inspection Test Plans, QA/QC, RFI’s and FCN’s
Project Leadership and Execution
- Lead projects from pre-construction through execution and close-out with full accountability for performance
- Provide direction and mentorship to Project Managers, Engineers, Foremen, and project teams
- Develop and implement project execution strategies, ensuring alignment with scope, schedule, and budget
- Oversee subcontractor procurement, scope development, and contract administration
- Manage project administration, reporting, and documentation processes
- Lead project meetings (internal and client-facing) and ensure clear communication across all stakeholders
- Ensure timely identification, documentation, and management of changes, including negotiation of change orders
- Maintain strong coordination of materials, equipment, and workforce planning
Planning and Project Controls
- Lead development and management of project schedules, milestones, and deliverables
- Ensure accurate forecasting, cost tracking, and resource planning throughout the project lifecycle
- Review contract documents to ensure clear understanding of scope, risks, and deliverables
- Contribute to pre-construction planning, estimating, and tender support
- Develop and monitor productivity, performance metrics, and operational efficienciesEnsure effective project close-out, including deficiencies, turnover documentation, final reporting and lessons learned
Financial Management and Accountability
- Full responsibility for project financial performance, including budgets, forecasts, profitability and margin reporting
- Oversee cost control, accruals, revenue tracking, and invoicing processes
- Review and approve change orders, pricing, and financial reporting
- Identify risks and implement corrective actions to protect project margins
- Support business planning and provide input into strategic financial decisions
Client and Stakeholder Management
- Act as the primary point of contact for clients, consultants, and key stakeholders
- Build and maintain strong, long-term client relationships
- Proactively identify opportunities for additional work and business development
- Resolve project-related disputes and issues in a timely and professional manner
- Represent the company in meetings, presentations, and negotiations
Leadership and Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop high-performing project teams
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
- Support recruitment, performance management, and career development of team members
- Provide guidance and training to developing Project Managers and field leaders
- Promote alignment with company values, policies, and operational standards
Qualifications
- 10–15+ years of experience in heavy civil construction, earthworks, or related industries
- Proven experience managing large-scale or complex construction projects or multiple projects simultaneously
- Degree or Diploma in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (P.Eng. considered an asset)
- Strong expertise in:
- Project planning and scheduling
- Cost control, forecasting, and financial management
- Contract administration and risk management
- Construction methods and execution strategies
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing multidisciplinary teams
- Proficiency with project management and scheduling software (Primavera or equivalent)
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Strong communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license
- CSTS/OSSA or CSO certification
- Ability to pass pre-access drug and alcohol testing
- Willingness to work in Fort McMurray (local or FIFO rotation)
Working Conditions
- Work is primarily performed on active construction sites in office trailers or field environments
- Regular site presence is required to support operations, safety, and team leadership
- Travel or relocation may be required based on project needs
