Areas of Responsibility :

Safety, Environmental & Quality

  • Ensures operating parameters are met and any non-conformances are properly logged along with the corrective actions taken.
  • Ensures all equipment is maintained and operated in a safe and efficient manner. Also responsible for the safe Emergency Shutdown Practices of the Recovery Boiler and all Power and Recovery equipment as required.
  • Maintains a high standard of safety by ensuring safe and correct work practices are followed.
  • Ensures processes are operated in compliance with environmental procedures. Address and report on all environmental incidents on shift.
  • Alerts applicable department of requirement to curtail or stop production to keep the mill within its environmental permit limits.
  • Ensures crew capability to work safely is achieved by assessing needs and supplying appropriate safety training and mentoring.
  • Involves crew members in safety meetings, ensures safety issues are escalated and communicated with documentation.
  • Incident investigations, audits and safety checklists are properly reported and action items are completed on time.
  • Housekeeping standards are being met.
  • Be aware of environmental responsibilities and maintains compliance with environmental regulations.

Operations & Key Job Accountabilities

  • Monitor all operational equipment and processes in area in order to operate plant as efficiently as possible.
  • Perform all administrative functions, including scheduling, completing logbooks, and managing attendance.
  • Participate in departmental projects.
  • Coordinate the daily maintenance work with the maintenance department.
  • Ensure reliability specifications are communicated and met.
  • Optimize process to meet efficiency and process targets.
  • Coordinates the day to day and shutdown maintenance for the Power and Recovery Department and advise and make recommendations for Power and Recovery equipment.
  • Monitors energy consumption and recommends methods to reduce consumption and improve energy utilization.
  • All other duties as may be assigned.
  • Employee Relations & Customer Satisfaction

  • Coaches the Shift Engineers in problem solving and implement effective accountabilities to lead the steam, power, recovery, chemical preparation, water treatment and effluent sections of the mill to achieve established objectives.
  • Be accountable for safe efficient leadership and direction of crew members.
  • Ensures operators are trained to safely perform the duties required of them in their areas and are actively training to assist in other positions.
  • Promotes employee involvement by engaging them in business solutions.
  • Ensures ability of the operations crew to meet expectations by involvement of crew members through assessing skills and developing a strategy to build and maintain an appropriate skill base.
  • Demonstrates leadership with open communication and involvement with production and maintenance personnel within the operating area.
  • Maintains a positive and professional attitude in dealing with other team members in the performance of duties.
  • Recognize employee achievements and celebrate significant milestones.
  • Ensures the proper and fair application of company policies and procedures, including the Collective Agreement.
  • Financial Accountability

  • Optimizes fuels and chemical additive proportions to ensure quality, production and cost effectiveness.
  • Be financially accountable through participation and development of operating, capital, and maintenance budgets planning process.
  • Manages personnel related costs for efficiency in time management, attendance, training, loss time incidents and overtime.
  • Staff Management

  • Establishes and maintains extensive partnerships and develops a positive working environment with the team and ensures the team members are empowered, encouraged, and rewarded for their contributions and performance. Mentors and guides the team.
  • Establishes and clearly defines responsibility for staff on the team and ensures the ongoing management and support of staff and effective employee performance.
  • Attracts and retains people with key skills with the focus on proficiency training and career development.
  • Qualifications :

  • Valid Inter-provincial or Second Class Power Engineer Certificate.
  • Minimum five (5) years experience with high-pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment, Pulp mill experience preferred.
  • Effectively communicate the operation of the Power and Recovery Department functions as it applies to mill production processes.
  • Demonstrated leadership in problem-solving techniques, troubleshoot and resolve technical, operation and personnel matters.
  • Effective communications and interpersonal skills to respond to internal customer needs and enhance team work.
  • Combination of equivalent experience and education.
