Job Summary
The Supported Child Development Worker will value the contributions and needs of the parents and work in partnership with them in providing care and education. The Supported Child Development Worker will provide a quality caring and supportive childcare program to members of the community that addresses their unique childcare needs, meets all regulatory standards required by federal, provincial, and municipal governments, and operates within the Childcare Practitioner Occupational Standards and Code of Ethics as defined by the Canadian Childcare Federation.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
To assist in the planning and preparation of a program for the children based on the centre’s philosophy and policiesTo create a safe and secure environmentTo plan and implement a well‑balanced program of activities for the special‑needs child / children assignedTo be inclusive of all children in their approach in dealing with special‑needs child / childrenKeep any required data or records of the assigned child / children with special needsTo guide other staff on the special needs and requirements of the assigned child / childrenWork with Supported Childcare, therapists and other professionals to meet the needs of the childrenTo treat each child with dignity, respect, love and careTo retain the sensitivity of each child’s individual needsTo use guidance techniques that are age‑appropriate, fair and encourage socially acceptable behaviourTo adhere to The B.C. Childcare Licensing Regulations which prohibit the use of physical punishment, humiliation, physical restraint, isolation, deprivation of food, rest, toileting, or any other discipline methods that undermine the child’s self‑esteemTo provide interaction with the children as a group and as required on an individual basisTo teach health and nutrition, rest habits and personal hygieneTo maintain hygiene practices e.g. in toileting, hand washing, food handlingTo administer basic First Aid as requiredTo assist with the supervision of indoor and outdoor playTo maintain appropriate positive day‑to‑day liaison with parents of assigned child / childrenTo encourage open communication concerning the needs and progress of assigned child / children with the parentsTo participate in the planning of special events, workshops, and meetings for parentsTo assist children with going to the bathroomAdministrative Duties
Attend centre staff meetingsEnsure weekly timesheets are completed every Thursday or prior to taking time off e.g. vacation leave, Spring Break, etc.To communicate with other Educators any pertinent information regarding children, parents, staff, program, etc.Keep informed of current trends in the treatment of children with special needsAbide by the Personnel Policy and Procedure Manual of Okanagan Indian BandWork cooperatively and show respect for all other centre staff and programsPerform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the OKIB policies and proceduresPerform other duties as requiredWho Are We Looking For
You have education, experience, or an equivalent combination may be considered. You are community‑minded, detail‑oriented, have a willingness to contribute to a team and an excellent communicator.
Education
Due to licensing requirements the incumbent must be at least 19 years of agePrefer Early Childhood Education certificate or Assistant Certificate or experience as an EACurrent First Aid Certificate as per Schedule C of the Child Care Licensing RegulationsExperience working with young children with special needsHas knowledge of the Okanagan culture and traditionsValid BC driver’s license, class 5 and reliable vehicleCriminal records check with vulnerable sector clearanceExperience
Experience working with children under the age of sixExperience working with First Nations communities is an assetExperience working with confidential informationCompetencies (KSAs & Desired Attributes)
