Job Duties
Richard Bland College (RBC) is a two-year, residential, liberal arts transfer institution that focuses on preparing students for transfer to highly ranked colleges and universities.
The College is a hidden gem located outside the Tri-Cities region and its rural setting featuring 750+ acres of wetlands, bucolic forest, and the state’s oldest and largest pecan grove.
RBC is currently seeking an exceptional individual to serve as Laboratory Manager for the Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.
The primary role of this position is to provide support for undergraduate labs at the college. Reporting to the Chair of Natural Science, this individual will be an integral part of our academic community, whose major responsibilities include :
- Maintaining and organizing several undergraduate biology and chemistry teaching labs and storage rooms.
- Assisting faculty with the setup and cleanup of student laboratory experiments in biology and chemistry.
- Ensuring that hazardous substances are stored and maintained properly, and that lab safety equipment is properly maintained and in working order.
- Performing the duties of lab safety and chemical hygiene officer for the department as assigned, including maintaining the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) for chemicals used in the department.
- Ordering supplies and equipment for the department in accordance with the college’s purchasing procedures.
- Teaching introductory Biology laboratory sections for the department on an as-needed basis.
Minimum Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or a closely related field.
- Experience with the maintenance, setup, and organization of undergraduate teaching labs.
- Excellent administrative and organizational skills.
- Enthusiastic commitment to the Richard Bland College mission, vision, and strategic plan.
Additional Considerations
A Master of Science degree (or higher) in a biology-related discipline from a regionally accredited college or university;
or at least 18 graduate credit hours in Biology.
- Considerable experience teaching and supervising undergraduate biology lab courses
- Knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of effective communication and instruction.
