We are currently hiring an Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Analyst to join the team at our Underground Salt Mine in Goderich, ON.

Compass Minerals’ Goderich Salt Mine, located 1,800 feet under Lake Huron, is the largest underground salt mine in the world. The mine is as deep as the CN Tower in Toronto is tall. The rock salt produced at the mine is used to keep citizens in North America safe as they travel through winter snow and ice. The salt is shipped to hundreds of communities around the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence Seaway. Some of the salt is trucked to the Compass Minerals plant less than 4 kilometers away, to be packaged for distribution and sale at retailers in North America. The salt is also sold in bulk to manufacturers that make plastics, detergents, disinfectants and other important products. Goderich is named Canada’s Prettiest Town and is best known for its stunning sunsets. Goderich is a lakeside community of 8,000 people located approximately 1.5 hours from London and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.

How will you contribute to the team?

This position serves as a member of the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) team for the Goderich Mine. This position will be accountable for ensuring effective risk management throughout the Goderich Mine and interacting with key stakeholders and should remain up-to-date on related regulations and codes. The EHS Analyst manages the process of identifying and measuring the Mine’s key risk activities, developing reports and plans, analyzing risk problems, defining and overseeing implementation of the risk solutions that help to ensure the environmental health and safety of the workplace, and optimize operations.

  • Execute and maintain the risk management process for the Goderich Mine site, which includes analyzing risk assessments, incidents, and other relative information to improve the risk management program
  • Review, record, and analyze the company risks based on HSE and business aspects
  • Make recommendations to ensure adherence to legal requirements, standards, and organizational objectives as appropriate
  • Perform inspections and initial assessments of cause and effects and make recommendations.
  • Audit the management system(s) for issues or improvements to ensure continual compliance and continual improvement
  • Assist in the development of environmental health and safety standards and guidelines
  • Arrange or facilitate risk assessments and assist others to ensure continual improvement and compliance with the risk management process.
  • Coordinate risk management meetings and agendas and assist in the preparation and presentation of various reports, meetings, and information sessions, including environmental health and safety policies and procedure presentations
  • Provide timely updates of records or logs to affected parties and employees.
  • Provide awareness training presentations to key stakeholders and their roles and responsibilities into mitigating risk.
  • Track, compile, and report EHS&S open issues, related statistics, and legislative and corporate requirements.
  • Participate in incident investigations, inspections, and audits as needed.
  • Other Environmental Health and Safety (including training) administrative duties as assigned

Qualifications

what should you bring to the role?

  • Post-Secondary diploma or degree or similar organizational discipline required Certification or Diploma in environmental systems is preferred.
  • 3-5 years of work experience required
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) is preferred
  • General knowledge of Ontario EHS&S regulations and will develop extensive knowledge of such regulations.
  • General knowledge of behavioural-based safety programs is a plus.
  • General knowledge of environmental management and permitting is beneficial.
  • Organizational skills and self-discipline for timely completion and follow-up of assigned tasks and accurate collection & tracking of required data.
  • Demonstrated sound knowledge of risk assessment and mitigation.
  • Must have proficient computer skills using MS Office suite.
  • Familiar with ISO and OHSAS or similar type ‘quality’ standard systems.
  • Strong organizational skills, proficient in scheduling programs, database management, and document and data control

  • This is a Monday-Friday position, working 8 hours per shift. Overtime may be required in order to support the operations.
  • This position may be expected to work underground.
