The City of Courtenay invites applications for a temporary full-time “Transportation Technologist” in the Transportation Division of the Operational Services Department. This is a full-time, union position subject to the terms and conditions in the collective agreement between the City and CUPE Local 556.
The Transportation Technologist reviews and provides in-house technical expertise in the field of traffic & transportation engineering. This includes road / intersection operational assessments, road safety reviews and improvements, access management, development proposal reviews, etc. The incumbent will oversee and ensure the effective delivery of various traffic programs such as crosswalk and pedestrian upgrades, traffic data collection program, railway crossing safety program, traffic calming initiatives, signal upgrades, guide sign upgrades, etc. The work also involves administering assigned capital projects, issuing permits and street licenses for various traffic related activities, reviewing and processing various engineering applications, and coordinating related construction and installation work. The incumbent is responsible for day-to-day traffic operation concerns raised by internal staff, the public or Council.
The Successful Candidate Will Have :
- Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology from a recognized educational institution, or equivalent combination of education, training and related work experience.
- Valid BC Class 5 Drivers License
- Eligible for membership in Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC with the designation of AScT or other equivalent.
- Criminal Record Check
- Sound (3 - 4 years) experience in civil / municipal engineering field specifically related to transportation and traffic management
- Some (1-2 years) experience in the use of GIS, AutoCAD and related software, and survey instruments
- Some experience in project management and contract administration
- Thorough knowledge of civil engineering principles, terminology, practices and techniques
- Considerable knowledge in infrastructure operation, maintenance and construction practices
- Considerable knowledge of legislated civil construction codes and regulations
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, conflict resolution, interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong office computer skills
- Ability to deal with contractors and engineers in a professional and timely manner
- Ability to interpret and apply City and other bylaws, policies, procedures, engineering design standards and specifications
- Ability to work well as part of a team and independently
- Physical ability to stand and walk frequently throughout the day; occasionally attend and inspect construction sites including climbing in and out of ditches and trenches; ability to frequently work in inclement weather
The current hourly wage rate is $40.33 based on a 35-hour work week (Schedule “A”) and an additional 12.4% in paid in lieu of vacation, statutory holiday pay and benefits.
