POSITION DESCRIPTION
The team sport psychologist / mental performance coach will play a critical role in the updated player development strategy that Golf Canada is executing to achieve the goal of 30 Canadian players with status on the LPGA and PGA TOUR by .
The team sport psychologist / mental performance coach will support members of the Team Canada women’s program which is comprised of approximately 8-16 professionals and elite amateurs who are in the final few years before turning pro.
This practitioner will work one-on-one and in group settings with the team to develop on-course mental performance skills and support a culture that prioritizes mental wellness of athletes.
This practitioner ultimately works to prepare the athlete to cope with the challenges and rigours of performing as an athlete trying to make the LPGA tour.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Help athletes to develop mental skills, techniques, attitudes, perspectives, and processes that lead to enhanced performance and well-being on and off the golf course.
- Provide competition and training camp mental performance support as determined in an annual schedule set by the Head Coach.
- Develop mental performance assessment and reporting tools and processes to be incorporated into the National Team program to monitor athlete progression.
Support athlete annual health reviews to optimize mental health status and goal setting processes.
- Work collaboratively with the coaching staff and other integrated support team (IST) members to help create individualized programs to support athlete performance.
- Act as a resource to national team coaches to assist with any issues which may be affecting athlete performance.
- Liaise with external mental performance practitioners to engage and guide these individuals towards success and to incorporate the philosophies and strategies of the national team program.
- Identify the trends within golf which require intervention and develop / propose long term strategies or projects which may be implemented as part of a high performance strategy for the betterment of the sport and ultimately the performance of golfers.
- Participate in annual debrief strategies and performance reviews.
REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES
- Professional designation in Sport Psychology or equivalent
- Demonstrated success in high-performance sport (golf experience considered a strong asset) with minimum five years of professional experience.
- Understands the realities of women’s professional sport and uses this knowledge to build strong connections with athletes and enhance player performance.
- Experience working with high performance sport parents.
- Be able to successfully conduct both group and one on one sessions
- Must be able to work well with other members of a coaching team. Be readily accessible and available for consultations with players and coaching staff.
- Availability for some travel nationally / internationally as needed.
