Role and Facility Information

The Palliative Care Physician Group in Island Health has a part-time permanent position available for a palliative care physician in Port Alberni, BC, able to work in a variety of clinical settings including community home visits and a local hospice.

Description of Role :

  • Provision of palliative care consults and follow-ups in West Coast General Hospital and the local 4-bed hospice, Ty Watson House.
  • Provision of outpatient and home visit palliative care consults within the Port Alberni area with occasional outreach to the west coast of Vancouver Island including Tofino / Ucluelet (driver’s license and car are required).
  • Participation in the rural & remote palliative care on-call schedule.
  • Teaching and supervision of medical learners (requires eligibility for faculty appointment with UBC).
  • May be eligible for additional remuneration in accordance with the Rural Subsidiary Agreement (RSA), including :
  • Recruitment Incentive - $10,000
  • Fee Premium - 7.98%
  • Annual Flat Fee - $12,110.22
  • Rural CME starting at $2200 / annum in year 3&4 in community, increasing to a maximum of $4400 / annum after 4 years.

The Alberni Valley has a population of over 18,000 and is centrally located on Vancouver Island. Just an hour’s drive to the beautiful beaches of Tofino and Ucluelet to the West and an hour East to Nanaimo, where a ferry or floatplane can get you to Vancouver in a heartbeat.

The valley is surrounded by beautiful mountains renowned for hiking, mountain biking, trail running, quadding, hunting, and camping. The ocean inlet is ideal for fishing and windsurfing, and Sproat Lake was just voted the best lake in British Columbia. World-class skiing on Mt. Washington is only a short drive away! The temperate climate offers an array of year-round outdoor activities and many recreational opportunities.

Port Alberni is a family-friendly community with affordable housing and excellent public schools. There is an abundance of activities for children, including programs in music, dance, gymnastics, and all team sports : soccer, baseball, hockey, lacrosse, etc.

Situated in the central interior of Vancouver Island at the end of a long narrow inlet, Port Alberni is one of the few ports on the west coast that provides shelter against some of the powerful Pacific weather systems. Blessed with a moderate climate, it harbours both commercial fishing vessels and pleasure craft. Recreational activities in the area include fishing, hiking, scuba diving, golfing, kayaking, and windsurfing.
