The Department of Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto is seeking applicants for the position of Departmental Director, Division of General Internal Medicine.

Applicants must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment as General Internal Medicine (GIM) care specialist at the rank of Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto.

The term of appointment is five years, renewable once following a successful review. Effective start date will be September 1, 2024, or as mutually agreed upon.

An aspirational leader is sought to drive change and advance the academic enterprise of the Division of General Internal Medicine over the next five years.

The ideal candidate will be an internationally respected scholar and visionary leader with sophisticated interpersonal skills.

They will meaningfully engage the academic leadership of the University and the affiliated teaching hospitals to build strong cross-department and cross-discipline collaboration, bridge diverse groups, strengthen capacity in scholarship, and provide strong mentorship to trainees and faculty at all stages of career.

The individual will establish an overarching vision and strategic direction for the Division. The Director reports directly to the Chair of Medicine.

The Division of General Internal Medicine consists of over 90 full-time faculty and 193 adjunct, part-time or cross-appointed faculty from partner Divisions.

The Division spans multiple sites in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), including Unity Health, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Sinai Health System, the University Health Network, Women’s College Hospital, and Baycrest.

GIM is central to the clinical care of complex patients at the hospitals affiliated with the university, and faculty provide clinical care and education in diverse settings.

Research within the Division of GIM focuses on health services research, clinical epidemiology and decision science, medical education, quality improvement, clinical trials, and population and public health.

Education is a high priority in the division, with training provided at multiple levels. The GIM subspecialty training program has the mandate of developing future leaders in GIM in both academic and community settings.

Launched in 2013, it is a competitive, highly ranked, fully-accredited program in which trainees benefit from the breadth and depth of clinical experiences, faculty expertise, and mentorship available at the University of Toronto.

The Department of Medicine is one of the largest in North America, with 946 full-time faculty members, 1,000 postgraduate trainees, and 20 sub-specialty divisions located across 6 fully-affiliated hospitals, 4 community-affiliated hospitals and more than a dozen additional clinical practice sites.

Applicants must hold an MD degree, be eligible for certification in Internal and or General Internal Medicine by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and licensure in Ontario.

The preferred hospital site for the Director’s clinical activities will be negotiated with the successful candidate and be one of the following University’s fully-affiliated sites : Sinai Health System, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, University Health Network, Unity Health Toronto - St.

Michael’s Hospital, Women’s College Hospital or Baycrest. Estimated total remuneration from all sources will be in the range $300,000-400,000 and will commensurate with qualifications, experience and clinical work.
