STATUS : Permanent; Full-time
SHIFT : 35 Hours per week - 09 : 30 am to 5 : 30pm - shift pattern will include at least one weekend day.

WAGE : $20.79 per hour

You are an energetic team player who will participate in all animal care duties and ensure that optimal levels of care are administered to the animals based on the Five Freedoms.
You have experience in customer relations and previous experience in animal husbandry. You care deeply about animals and uphold the highest animal care standards.
About the Position :
The main responsibility of the Animal Care Attendant position is to care for the health and welfare of the animals in the Shelter.
A subsidiary responsibility is to give support to the front office staff in an effective and courteous manner.
Some specific duties :
- To work collaboratively with others to maintain the entire physical plant in a clean, sanitary and efficient manner on an ongoing basis
- To maintain the kennels, runs and cat cages in a clean, sanitary and efficient manner on an ongoing basis
- To treat the animals humanely, with compassion and concern, and transmit these values to others both on and off the job
- To provide the animals with proper diet and to ensure that they feed and water properly
- To ensure the animal’s health and well-being in accordance with the society’s animal health policy, including the administration of such medications as specified by the animal health technologist or other authorized shelter staff
- To maintain a high level of standards in order to portray to the public the image of the SPCA as a compassionate and caring organization
- To willingly help co-ordinate the supporting work of volunteers, in the spirit that we all work together for the benefit of all animals
- To perform other duties, as required, which are necessary to ensure the smooth operation of the shelter
- To collaborate with other shelter personnel thereby creating a positive and harmonious atmosphere among staff and volunteers, enhancing team performance
Secondary Key Responsibilities :
To assist the front office staff as may be required in :
- Telephone reception and other communications
- Answering counter inquiries
- Receiving animals for surrender
- All adoption procedures
- License and merchandise sales
- Performance of general office routines and record keeping
- Other related duties
- To perform all of the above in a courteous, friendly way to clients, volunteers and other staff, to ensure the highest possible reputation for the shelter and the maintenance of the goodwill of its community
Qualifications you need to have :
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Valid Class N or 5 BC Drivers’ License and driver’s abstract
- Demonstrable interest in all aspects of animal welfare
- Knowledge of the geography of the Branch’s warrant area in general and the Shelter’s warrant area in particular
- A sound knowledge of animals, their breeds, characteristics and more common diseases
- Ability to work as a team player and demonstrable well-developed interpersonal skills
- Basic computer skills sufficient to deal effectively with the necessary front office routines
- Excellent customer service
- Ability to prioritize demands on time
- Completion and demonstrated competency in the following BC SPCA courses upon hire (preferred), or within 6 months of hire : SPCA Certificate, Part 1
