Department : Resident Care – Shoreham Village
Responsible To : Care Support Manager and Nursing Services Manager
Qualifications :
- Bachelors / Masters of Science in Occupational Therapy
- Registered with Nova Scotia Society of Occupational Therapists
- Current registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of Nova Scotia
- One to six months of relevant work experience
- Long term care experience is considered an asset
- Experience with wheelchair / special equipment is considered an asset
- Membership in the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists or have established eligibility
- Knowledge of the following : Medical Terminology, Falls Prevention Methods / Risk Management Procedures, Environmental Hazard Awareness, Proper Body Mechanics, Therapy and Counselling, Principles of geriatric restorative care, Customer and Personal Service, Specialized wheelchair seating
- Must have excellent Communication, interpersonal, problem solving and time management and judgment, and decision-making skills
M ajor Responsibilities :
Consults with residents and provides assessments in an occupational therapy context (seating, mobility, swallowing, fall prevention, and mental health)Completes administrative duties (e.g. tracking statistics and referrals, communicating with internal and external stakeholders)Designs Occupational Therapy treatment programs for OTA to implement / carry out and monitor resident progress in these programsCollaborates with the nursing team to plan interventions for residentsInstructs and educates internal stakeholdersMentors student Occupational Therapists and student Occupational Therapy AssistantsCompletes written funding requests for resident-specific equipmentTasks :
Plans, organizes and conducts OT programs to help residentsDevelops and maintains communication links with multiple internal and external clientsParticipates in resident care responsibilities to promote independence in daily living skills, communication, mobility, and socializationTests and evaluates residents’ physical and mental abilities and analyzes medical data to determine realistic rehabilitation goalsEvaluate residents and prepares reports detailing progressCompletes and maintains necessary records (e.g. work statistics, referrals)Trains caregivers on how to provide for the needs of a resident during and after therapyRecommend changes in residents’ work or living environments consistent with their needs and capabilitiesConducts assessments of individual resident’s functionality within their environmentsConducts assessments of equipment, architecture, and other barriers in individuals' home settings and makes recommendations as necessaryWorks with residents to set goals, plan, and implement interventions, and evaluate resultsWrites and submits funding requestsConducts inventory of wheelchair equipment, obtains estimates, and requests funding for wheelchair repairs for residentsPerforms other related duties as requiredSalary : As per Shoreham’s scale
