ABOUT THE ROLE
Under the direction and guidance from senior staff and management this position is responsible for carrying out a range of routine specialized and heavy duty equipment operation duties; also performs other duties required to ensure the York Region road system is maintained in a safe state of repair in compliance with operating standards; participates in a training program to obtain the skills and license needed to fully perform the job in a proficient manner and performs activities and duties to the level of training obtained in accordance with Regional standards.
WHAT YOULL BE DOING
- Actively partakes in a training program which will involve progressively more independent and complex work.
- Must attend and successfully complete the training program in order to obtain DZ license other specialized heavy equipment training and other training as needed.
- Operates the full range of Regional and rented equipment such as dump trucks loaders tractors chainsaws grass cutting equipment and/or paving marking equipment associated with the repair and maintenance of the Regional road systems under guidance and within training and knowledge received.
- Provides traffic control (flagging) often in high traffic areas on operational work sites and during emergency operation activities in compliance with all safety standards and regulatory requirements.
- Performs activities required in the maintenance and repair of road signs guideposts hazard protection devices and drainage installations.
- Performs daily preventative maintenance and repairs on specialized heavy-duty equipment (i.e.: changing belts & hoses) with assistance; performs minor maintenance of equipment such as changing bulbs lubricating washing of equipment etc.
- Patrols roads within the assigned work area for potential hazards in response to winter operations as directed.
- Operates winter road maintenance equipment and applies de-icing or traction materials in compliance with Regional standards as directed.
- Completes daily maintenance forms and records as required.
- Participates in Health and Safety training to maintain safety standards and practices and works in accordance with all safety standards utilizing all personal protective equipment as required.
- Responds to inquiries from the public or contractors in accordance with Regional standards and escalates as needed.
- Works in consultation with the staff and management on matters related to all operator tasks maintenance and repairs.
- Participates in team building activities.
- Ensures that services provided meet Regional customer service standards.
- Manages information in accordance with legislation and corporate standards.
- Performs other duties as assigned that are in accordance with Branch and Departmental objectives.
WHAT WERE LOOKING FOR
- Successful completion of a Secondary School diploma or equivalent approved combination of education and experience.
- Required to attend and successfully complete an internal training program including written and practical tests in order to obtain a DZ license within six months and obtain other skills required.
- Demonstrated interest in equipment and vehicles as they relate to road maintenance.
- Valid Ontario Class G drivers license free of serious offences under the Highway Traffic Act.
- Ability to perform physical labour activities associated with the performance of maintenance operations.
- Ability to read write comprehend and speak at an intermediate level of the English language**
- Demonstrated ability in the Regions core competencies.
