Work environment
The Isthmus of Chignecto, the land bridge between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, has been a focus of overland travel routes for centuries for the area's Indigenous people and the Europeans who followed. In the heart of Mi'kma'ki, in the Chignecto isthmus, this star-shaped fort, built in 1751, became the scene of three acts of war between France and Great Britain, the deportation of the Acadians and the tearing apart of British North America. History buffs and culture lovers will enjoy touring the ruins of a star-shaped fort that was vital to the 18th-century struggle between France and Britain over Acadie. Kids can dress up like “gate guards” and patrol the fort’s earthen glacis, casemates and battlegrounds. The site’s wide-open spaces make for wondrous kite flying, bird watching and picnics. You may be rewarded with a sighting of a northern harrier, a bald eagle or a snowy owl!
