Job description
Position: Process Design Engineer/Analyst

Employment Type: Permanent

Location: 800 Kipling Avenue, Toronto, ON

Department: Nuclear Equipment Solutions (NES)

Reports to: Director, Equipment Design

Hours per week: 37.5

Number Required: 2

Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact

    • Prepare Front End Engineering (FEED) and interpret process engineering documents. FEED includes but is not limited to:
      • Process Design Description and Requirements
      • Process Flow Diagram (PFD)
      • Process and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID)
      • Process Design Simulation & Calculations
      • Process Equipment Sizing/Rating Calculations (such as distillation column, pumps, recombiners, LPCE columns, E-Cells, HX, coolers, Condensers, Valve Sizing, etc.
      • Process Specifications
      • Control Philosophy (i.e. Control Narrative)
      • Other documentation as necessary

    • Work with Mechanical and EI&C Engineers to support implementation of process design into effective manufacturable and testable designs.
    • Ability to understand mechanical drawings and provide advice and review to address manufacturability or performance concerns.
    • Ability to visit client sites locally and internationally, as needed.
    • Ability to support multiple projects simultaneously, as warranted.
    • Good understanding of ASME VIII and ASME B31.1 and ASME B31.3.
    • Experience with one or more CAD package for process flow design such as Autocad or others.
    • Knowledge and experience in Distillation, Dryers, Scrubbers, Cryogenics and Process Simulation is an asset.
    • Identify equipment suppliers and work with them to ensure conformance with the specification.
    • Able to work under the direction of Technical Team Lead and Subject Matter Experts to develop concept designs.
    • Prepare test procedures for functional testing, and factory acceptance testing to a high degree of accuracy and meeting the requirements of Kinectrics quality program.
    • Developing custom unit operation models using Visual basic (VB), Python, C# or any other programming language is highly desirable. Good understanding of chemical reaction engineering is also desired.
    • Work independently and as part of engineering teams to contribute and prepare technical evaluations, technical procedures, technical test plans, data analysis, report preparation and report reviews.
    • Liaise with customers, staff, contractors, consultants, and vendors as appropriate.
    • Assist in procurement engineering activities such as preparing procurement plans, incoming inspections, scope of work, reviewing terms and identifying appropriate risks.
    • Identify opportunities for improvement in the technical processes and support change derived from lessons learned.
    • Facilitate to develop 2D/3D models of complicated equipment or skids that will help in the fabrication process.
    • Take part in R&D projects.
    • Lead or assist in developing proposals for internal and external customers.
    • Perform project management and other assigned duties on as need basis.
    • Act as a technical support for Department Manager and others in the department.
    • Assist in the negotiation and administration of contracts, including cost estimates, schedule, and resources required.
    • Carry out customers' work and prepare reports with recommendations based on results achieved.
    • Represents Kinectrics at conferences.
    • Perform other duties as required.
What You Need to Succeed

    • A four-year university degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering (Masters or PhD is preferable) plus a minimum of five or more years of engineering experience in Nuclear or manufacturing industry.
    • Must have demonstrated knowledge and experience in modeling & design of process systems.
    • Experience in process systems, process skids, and panel fabrication and FAT/commissioning testing is required.
    • Knowledge of ASME Boiler Pressure and Vessel code is considered an asset.
    • Having process design experience in tritium and hydrogen technologies is an asset.
    • Familiar with tritium processes like CECE, WD, HPS, ISS and CDS.
    • Strong understanding of tritium specific design requirements.
    • Familiar with different commercial gas separation technologies such as cryogenic distillation and thermal diffusion columns.
    • Familiar with tritium instrumentation such as ion chambers and liquid scintillation technique.
    • Experience in managing suppliers for part design, assembly, and manufacturing.
    • Knowledge and/or experience with CANDU nuclear technology are considered an asset.
    • Excellent problem-solving, written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively on a technical level.
    • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills.
    • Demonstrated strong customer skills and capabilities to run research programs for customers on time and on budget.
    • Demonstrated ability to be flexible in areas of work and the ability to work in a team environment.
    • Strong computer skills.
    • A period of at least 5 years in working on projects of medium to high complexity is considered necessary to gain this experience.
    • Registration as a Professional Engineer is required.
