The Role

As a Biologist, you are responsible for leading and coordinating various aspects of environmental assessments, impact mitigation, and project management. Your expertise in both fisheries and terrestrial ecology, combined with your knowledge of environmental legislation and policy, enables you to conduct thorough assessments, prepare regulatory applications, and provide guidance to project teams. Additionally, you play a key role in mentoring junior staff, developing client relationships, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality environmental services.

The ideal candidate will have the following background, skills and attributes :

A Bachelor or Masters degree in Biology, Ecology, or related discipline.

5+ years experience in field biology, with emphasis on ecosystems of Alberta.

Registration as a Professional Biologist with Alberta Society of Professional Biologists will be considered an asset.

Knowledge and experience with field survey protocols and reporting for birds, reptiles and amphibians, vascular plants and / or fish.

Excellent report writing and oral communication skills.

Ability to identify and delineate habitat types, impacts / mitigations, for fish / birds / other wildlife / vascular plants.

Experience in the collection, analysis and reporting of field data following established protocols.

Environmental inspection experience during construction, including erosion and sediment control.

Requisite project planning, scheduling, and time management skills, related to the completion of assigned tasks.

Practical experience completing Environmental Assessments / Evaluations for private, municipal, provincial, and federal projects.

Project management experience would be considered an asset.

Possess a valid driver's license and have access to a vehicle with valid registration and insurance, including providing 3 year driver abstract.

Job Duties :

Conduct background information searches, database reviews, and agency consultation in support of projects.

Assessment and application of both fisheries and terrestrial impact / mitigation and protection measures in report writing and in accordance with environmental legislation and policy.

Conduct communications and coordination regarding contract and tender requirements.

Preparation of applications for environmental permits or approvals.

Perform reviews of environmental deliverables prepared by environmental sub-consultants and Ontario based colleagues for quality assurance purposes.

Mentor junior staff as required with respect to field methodologies and report preparation.

Preparation of both fisheries and terrestrial reports and contribute to tender packages.

Carry out, and lead biological field investigations including breeding bird surveys, botanical inventories, ELC, wildlife surveys, SAR surveys, fisheries assessments and wetland delineations.

Assist in growing the environmental business line by writing winning proposals, developing new client relationships, and delivering excellent service to existing clients.

Management of smaller projects as required.

Travel to sites within Alberta to conduct field surveys as required.

Provide construction liaison and complete construction site inspections and project reporting on an as-needed basis.

Complete reviews of Contractor submittals including but not limited to Environmental Construction Operations (ECO) Plans, Care of Water Plans, Total Suspended Solids monitoring programs and other construction related submittals.

Maintain a safe working environment by complying with all safety codes, guidelines, and regulations forming our Health Safety & Environmental management system.

Participate in all assigned Health and Safety training programs.
