Job description

Located in Vancouver, the Post-Secondary Employers’ Association (PSEA) is the accredited bargaining agent for nineteen public colleges, special purpose teaching universities, and institutes in British Columbia. PSEA provides labour relations and human resources direction and support to its member institutions including the coordination of collective bargaining, sectoral grievances / arbitrations, management of the sector’s compensation framework, administration of forty-two collective agreements, dissemination of human resources best practices, delivery of labour relations training, and consultation with the various unions. Opportunity

PSEA is recruiting for the position of Legal Counsel, who works as part of PSEA’s Legal Services team and directly with the Executive Director of Legal and Sector Services. The primary role of Legal Counsel is to bring a strong client focus and commitment to deliver a consistently high calibre of service, including reviewing, drafting and interpreting collective agreements and policy, ensuring compliance in legislation through legal research, communications and guidance to PSEA’s members, providing advice regarding contract administration and grievance handling, and supporting members in labour litigation with a sectoral impact.

Education and Experience

  • Law degree;
  • A member in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia;
  • A minimum of five years of professional experience in labour relations, ideally in a post-secondary environment;
  • Comprehensive knowledge and demonstrated familiarity with litigation and / or labour arbitration, including related legislation and rules;
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, manage and implement;
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and relationship skills including the ability to foster effective, collaborative working relationships with diverse groups;
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills; and,
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

A qualified applicant with experience is anticipated to commence near the mid‐point of the salary scale.
