Making an Impact
The Research Impact and Outreach Manager plays a pivotal role in advancing the CCS Research Strategy by leading research outreach initiatives supporting knowledge to action (i.e. research to impact) and general audience engagement. The Manager leads the national RIOT program (Research Information Outreach Team), a growing volunteer‑based program aiming to bridge the gap between cancer research and the public.
Reporting to the Director, Research Program, Impact, and Outreach, this critical role will build a strong research community through strategic research outreach initiatives, strengthening CCS’s ability to meaningfully share cancer research in an accurate, non‑complex way and to highlight its impact.
The Research Impact and Outreach Manager is responsible for the supervision, performance management and professional development of the group of active volunteers they oversee (>100).
What You’ll Be Doing
- Lead the Research Information Outreach Teams (RIOT) program:
- Coordinate researchers volunteering through RIOT.
- Manage and oversee the national RIOT program and act as the main point of contact for over 100 volunteers.
- Ensure each volunteer chapter lead has the tools and knowledge to manage their own team of volunteers.
- Monitor volunteer progress, foster relationships through quarterly chapter lead check‑in meetings, regular check‑ins, training modules, and new member initiatives.
- Work with the volunteer engagement team on onboarding, policy education and off‑boarding.
- Act as the first point of contact for conflict resolution and questions.
- Manage administrative responsibilities, including processing expense claims and tracking annual spending.
- Develop integration plans, Terms of Reference and policies for RIOT with guidance from senior leadership.
- Create streamlined processes for internal and external RIOT‑related requests.
- Coordinate budgetary requests and support budget planning, reconciliation, and resource allotment.
- Plan and deliver annual meeting/leadership retreat and townhall meeting for RIOT volunteers.
- Oversee RIOT program content, ensuring consistency and scientific accuracy.
- Establish a senior scientist group to mentor volunteers and vet scientific content.
- Identify new opportunities for RIOT as an educational and fundraising tool.
- Build relationships with other departments to leverage RIOT engagement across the organization.
- Manage grant applications supporting RIOT initiatives.
- Manage interns, research volunteers, and students developing outreach resources.
- Lead consultations, workshops, and working groups with other teams to ensure synergy.
- Establish a RIOT Advisory Committee and develop its roadmap and Terms of Reference.
- Develop and implement research outreach initiatives to elevate CCS impact in research:
- Coordinate lab tours and support speaker/resource requests.
- Create materials and processes for lab tours within the research community.
- Build on the Research Showcase and develop a virtual showcase.
- Catalogue academic and other related conferences, supporting representation decisions.
- Support and track conference attendance and research presence.
- Develop and disseminate CCS research materials focused on impact and outreach.
- Develop, implement, and monitor evaluation of research outreach activities:
- Establish KPIs to measure effectiveness of RIOT and outreach initiatives.
- Lead evaluation, collect impact reports, and oversee yearly improvements.
- Measure and assess outreach impact to inform future initiatives.
- Keep up with latest research and practices in engagement and impact.
- Other responsibilities:
- Contribute to diversity, inclusion, belonging, and equity culture.

Qualifications
- Master’s degree (or higher) in scientific communication, outreach, or a health‑related field preferred; 5–10 years of experience in a similar role.
- Health‑related education and expertise required (oncology preferred).
- Experience in science communication with general audiences using various delivery methods.
- Research experience strongly preferred.
- Experience working in non‑profit health organizations serving diverse stakeholders.
- Experience organizing and delivering multi‑faceted events.
- Strong relationship building skills managing expectations of internal and external stakeholders.
- Exceptional written communication skills, synthesizing information into compelling content.
- Exceptional verbal communication skills, conveying complex information in an engaging way.
- Interpersonal and relationship building skills, connecting with diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to work effectively in virtual and in‑person settings.
- Strong organizational and event management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple shifting priorities under tight deadlines.
- Bilingualism (French/English) highly preferred, with French an asset for nationwide operations.
