Job Brief

This position seeks graphic designers with a focus on any of the following practices : interactivity, generative media, creative computation, post-digital design practices, usability, and / or experience design.

The Faculty of Design is the largest of OCAD U's three faculties. It boasts six undergraduate programs : Advertising, Environmental Design, Graphic Design, Illustration, Industrial Design, and Material Art & Design (i.e. textiles and jewelry). The design-related Graduate Programs include Inclusive Design, Design for Health, Strategic Foresight and Innovation, Interdisciplinary Art, Media, and Design; and Digital Futures. The University is especially seeking candidates who might also contribute to the Inclusive Design and Strategic Foresight and Innovation graduate programs.

The Faculty of Design invites applications for one (1) Tenure-Track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the program of Graphic Design. The position seeks graphic designers with a focus on any of the following practices : interactivity, generative media, creative computation, post-digital design practices, usability, and / or experience design.

The candidate should demonstrate a critical engagement with their field and familiarity with contemporary issues pertaining to design and its relationship to digital technology. Candidates who demonstrate capacity to develop curricula that foregrounds Indigenous knowledges and frameworks or Black knowledges and frameworks and their impact on graphic design will be given priority. The ideal candidate will also be able to teach across the four years of the program and should be able to teach tech-forward studio-based, lecture, and seminar format courses. A robust professional practice as a designer and researcher / writer is an asset.

This appointment is expected to commence on August 1, 2024, and is subject to budgetary approval.

Summary of Responsibilities

The successful candidate will :

  • Teach across multiple year levels in the Graphic Design undergraduate program, with potential opportunity to teach in OCAD U’s graduate programs;
  • Develop curriculum pertaining to interactivity that supports the goals of the program and OCAD U's academic plan
  • Assume a key role in contributing to student success at OCAD U through the ongoing development, decolonization, and bringing of diverse knowledges into the undergraduate / graduate curriculum, policies and promotion through participation in Faculty and program meetings and initiatives;
  • Develop course materials, conduct studios, and teach—including lectures, critiques, grading and evaluations that that meets academic and curricular requirements and deadlines;
  • Maintain an active creative practice, research program, professional practice and / or scholarship within graphic design;
  • Provide service to the department, faculty and university-wide governance systems and participate in building OCAD U's community and promoting student life and culture on campus;
  • Provide outreach with local and regional Indigenous and / or racialized communities and the mentorship of Indigenous and / or racialized students and youth;
  • Instructors will be expected to deliver courses in person, as well as have the capacity to deliver courses remotely

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have :

  • At least eight years (without academic degrees) to four years (with a Bachelor’s degree) of peer recognized career achievement in interactivity and the graphic design field. A Master’s degree, or PhD will be considered an asset;
  • A strong facility working with (and teaching) code and algorithm-based design
  • A proven record of professional practice, and / or research relevant to qualifications and experience in interactivity and graphic design;
  • A demonstrated understanding of the ways in which diversity, equity, inclusion, sustainability, and decolonization are fundamental to the quality of the student experience, to innovative knowledge sharing, and to design production;
  • A proven record of promoting a respectful and inclusive work and learning environment for students, staff, and faculty
  • Remuneration

    Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications with access to full benefits, and pension contribution after one year of service.
