Nasittuq provides Operation & Maintenance services for the North Warning System (NWS). The NWS is a joint Canada and United States early-warning radar system with 47 sites located in Northern Canada; a Control Centre and Support Centre located in North Bay, ON and a Contract Management Office located in Ottawa, ON.

NATURE AND SCOPE :

We currently have several Vehicle Mechanic opportunities available throughout all radar sites in NT, NU and NL!

The Facilities Maintenance Technician – Vehicle Mechanic (FMT-V) has functional responsibility for maintenance and repair of all site vehicles, heavy equipment and powered support equipment (both mobile and portable) at the North Warning System (NWS) Short Range Radar (SRR) and Long Range Radar (LRR) sites.

This is a part time, Unionized fly in fly out 6x6 rotational position. The candidate must be comfortable working in colder climates, during a 6 week on, 6 week off rotation schedule. All travel to / from site, including board and meals, is provided.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Maintains and repairs (providing diagnostic, problem solving capabilities) the site Maintenance Support Equipment (MSE) which encompasses all land, water and snow equipment such as trucks, graders, scrapers, loaders, snowmobiles, snowblowers, snowplows, all-terrain vehicles, bulldozers, portable generators, portable compressors, boats, and all related equipment required to support each site.
  • Responsible for both preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment; and, provides recommendations for repair, overhaul and decommission actions
  • Responsible for the provision of OJT to new and other site staff authorized to receive maintenance, repair and operation instruction
  • Assists in the operation of snow-clearing equipment as required
  • Assists in the loading / unloading of aircraft as required
  • Samples POL products in the absence of the POL specialist and assists in fuel off-loading operations.
  • Documents, reports, and maintains facilities files as related to NWS work management systems, operational field reports, data analysis, etc.
  • Performs other duties assigned by a higher authority, which are unplanned or of a transient nature.

QUALIFICATIONS :

EDUCATION : High School education or a combination of education and experience

CERTIFICATE(S) / LICENSE(S ) :

  • Qualified Motor Vehicle Mechanic 310S and / or 310T including diesel endorsement (note : 310S Automotive Service Technician up to 9,000 kg)
  • A provincial or territorial certificate of qualification is required
  • Military QL 5 or Journeyman qualification in heavy equipment or heavy-duty mechanic or Automotive Technician
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • EXPERIENCE :

  • Five years’ proven hands field experience
  • Experience within the last 10 years in heavy equipment could also be considered
  • KNOWLEDGE OF : Broad knowledge of electronics and mathematics, and how vehicle complex components work and interact

  • Professional and friendly comportment due to many dealings with internal project stakeholders.
  • Skilled in the use of diagnostic equipment
  • Able to adapt to changing tasks and locations.
  • Ability to travel as part of a small team to adjacent sites to perform functions
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), as required
  • Ability to work under physically demanding, often adverse weather conditions in remote Arctic locations
