Position Overview
The Senior Operations Manager provides senior-level leadership and strategic oversight for all Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) construction operations across residential and commercial projects. With extensive industry experience, this role is accountable for estimating, operational performance, project execution, financial results, workforce leadership, and continuous improvement across the organization.
This position plays a critical role in aligning field operations, estimating projects, project management, and administrative functions to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards, while supporting long-term growth, scalability, and profitability.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating & Pre-Construction Leadership
- Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing scopes.
- Review drawings, specifications, and bid documents to determine project requirements.
- Lead quantity take-offs, pricing, and scope reviews for residential and commercial projects.
- Develop conceptual, budgetary, and design-build estimates as required.
- Identify risks, opportunities, and value-engineering options during the estimating phase.
- Coordinate and manage the full bid process from invitation to submission.
Senior Operations & Project Oversight
- Provide strategic oversight of all MEP construction operations across multiple divisions and project portfolios.
- Direct execution of large, complex residential and commercial projects, including high-value and multi-site programs.
- Ensure consistent delivery of projects in accordance with contract requirements, drawings, specifications, and company standards.
- Identify operational risks, resource constraints, and performance gaps, implementing proactive solutions.
Leadership & Organizational Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop senior project managers, construction managers, supervisors, and operational leadership teams.
- Support workforce planning, succession planning, and leadership development across operations.
- Establish clear performance expectations and accountability for safety, quality, schedule, and financial outcomes.
- Foster a high-performance culture focused on teamwork, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
Safety, Quality & Compliance Leadership
- Champion a strong safety culture and ensure full compliance with OSHA, regulatory requirements, and company policies.
- Provide executive oversight of quality assurance and quality control programs across all MEP disciplines.
- Conduct high-level site reviews, audits, and operational assessments.
- Lead incident investigations, root-cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.
Financial & Performance Accountability
- Oversee operational budgets, forecasting, and financial performance across all projects.
- Review job costing, labour productivity, margin performance, and backlog health.
- Drive cost-control initiatives and operational efficiencies while maintaining quality and safety standards.
- Support billing strategies, cash flow management, and project close-out processes.
Client, Partner & Stakeholder Management
- Serve as a senior representative of the company with key clients, developers, general contractors, and industry partners.
- Support contract negotiations, change management, and resolution of high-level client or project issues.
- Ensure client satisfaction and long-term relationship development across residential and commercial markets.
- Collaborate with estimating and preconstruction teams on strategy, pricing, and risk assessment.
Systems, Process & Growth Leadership
- Develop and implement standardized operational policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Lead improvements to scheduling, resource planning, communication, and reporting systems.
- Support the adoption and optimization of project management, accounting, and field technology platforms.
- Track KPIs, operational metrics, and performance indicators to support data-driven decision-making.
- Contribute to strategic planning, market expansion, and organizational growth initiatives.
Qualifications
Required
- 20+ years of experience in construction operations, project management, or senior field leadership within MEP trades.
- Proven track record leading large-scale residential and commercial construction operations.
- Deep technical knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems and construction methods.
- Extensive experience managing multiple complex projects, teams, and divisions simultaneously.
- Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, forecasting, job costing, and margin management.
- Demonstrated senior leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving capabilities.
- Valid drivers license.
Preferred
- Degree in Construction Management, Electrical or Civil Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
- OSHA 30 or equivalent safety leadership certification.
- Experience scaling operations, standardizing processes, or supporting company growth initiatives.
