Job description

Unit Summary

The Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program (HRLMP) is a collaborative program funded and operated jointly by the Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph's Hospital. The Program is committed to change and innovation, through education, service and research, to bring the highest quality science into healthcare for the benefit of the community, and to participate in the clinical application and interpretation of the science.

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Manager and Pathologist, the Pathologist's Assistant performs gross examining, describing, dissecting and sampling of Surgical Gross Specimens along with other supportive functions in the area. All primary functions are performed under the direction of a pathologist. Additionally you will be expected to engage in role-related teaching, professional development and research activities.

Qualifications

1. Bachelor of Science (Health Sciences / Biology related), allied health sciences or related degree, required

2. Successful completion of a Masters level Pathologists' Assistant degree program or a minimum of 2 years' experience working as a Pathologists' Assistant, performing gross dissection of small / simple and large / complex surgical specimens

3. Certification with the Canadian Association of Pathologists (CAP) – Section of Pathologists' Assistant (CCCPA) or American Society for Clinical Pathology – Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) an asset

4. Strong knowledge of Anatomy

5. Demonstrated computer literacy (MS Outlook, internet / intranet)

6. Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail are essential

7. Ability to work in a team environment with strong interpersonal, communication and conflict resolution skills

8. Strong collaboration skills and able to develop and maintain effective relationships within healthcare teams

9. Excellent problem solving skills with flexibility and ability to manage change in a dynamic environment

10. Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient and family centered care and patient and staff safety at HHSC
