Job Summary

Scottsdale Community College (SCC) is seeking a full-time, Communication Residential Faculty. The position will instruct, supervise and evaluate students with diverse backgrounds in introductory communication courses in traditional, hybrid, and online formats in accordance with Maricopa County Community Colleges District (MCCCD) and SCC policies and procedures. Such introductory courses may include the introduction to human communication, interpersonal communication, public speaking, intercultural communication, small group communication, introduction to communication inquiry, and other introductory courses germane to human communication. This position will research, develop, and implement introductory communication courses as well as remain current in developments within the field in order to research, develop and implement updated instructional materials. Finally, the faculty person will contribute to department planning as well as participate in campus & district activities as assigned.

To best serve the students, department, and college, this position requires a physical presence on campus.

This position is scheduled to start January 2025.

Essential Functions

  • Supervises and instructs students of various ages and diverse backgrounds in classroom and online settings.
  • Provides classroom and online instruction that covers a wide variety of human communication related topics utilizing learning materials that include verbal, written, audio/visual, computer- based multimedia, and learning management systems such as Canvas.
  • May provide guidance, support, and instruction to students in co-curricular settings, such as student organizations/clubs.
  • Evaluates student performance and monitors students’ scholastic records including exam preparation and administration, scoring, tracking, and calculating final grades for each student.
  • Designs and develops curricula and instructional materials.
  • Develops and enhances knowledge of subject matter taught through Faculty Professional Growth (FPG) to remain current in developments within the field in order to research, develop and implement updated instructional materials.
  • Participates in department, college, and district planning and development, and related committees.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree or higher in the teaching field OR

Master’s degree or higher in any field with 18 graduate credit hours

Course Subjects

COM, COMM, CST, SP, SPCH, SPH, SPC, RHE, RHT, BUC, CMST, SPE, MCO; 400-level courses cross-listed with 500+ level courses in these prefixes may also be counted if the candidate provides evidence on the transcript that the course was cross-listed. Course descriptions or syllabi may be needed to determine the content and level of the course.

Desired Qualifications

A. Two (2) or more years of relevant teaching experience, preferably at the community college level, utilizing a variety of delivery formats including in-person, online, live online, hybrid, and short-term/accelerated courses.

B. Two (2) or more years of teaching interpersonal communication, public speaking, small group communication, intercultural communication and/or introductory communication theory & research.

C. Demonstrated work experience in contributing to academic department strategic and operational planning.

D. Experience developing college level curriculum and assessments.

E. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness as shown by experience working with, interacting with, and/or instructing individuals of diverse abilities or cultural backgrounds.

F. Demonstrated experience using technology and/or Open Educational Resources (OER) to engage students, especially in online settings.

Special Working Conditions

  • Travel to campus during the interview/selection process will be at the candidate's own expense.
  • Will be required to travel or be assigned to other MCCCD locations.
  • May be required to work evenings and weekends.
  • May require prolonged periods of sitting and viewing a computer screen.
  • May be required to lift or carry up to 25 lbs.
  • This position requires a physical presence on campus with possible partial remote work depending on business needs to best serve the students, department, and college.
  • This position is scheduled to start January 2025.
