Job description

Bilsland Griffith Benefit Administrators is a third party pension and benefit plan administrator based in Burnaby. We work closely with the members and Trustees of negotiated cost pension and benefits plans in delivering superior member service and accurate plan administration.

Our clients, the trustees of health and welfare trusts, defined benefit and defined contribution plans, value our breadth of experience and attention to detail and service in administering their plans.

Our team is made up of pension and benefit administrators, data analysts, accountants, support staff and consultants, focusing on making sure that plan members understand the benefits that have been negotiated on their behalf.

This is a senior position, where the successful candidate will be responsible for the overall administration of various multi-employer pension and benefit plans. As well, they will mentor and review the work of junior administrators ensuring accurate data and calculations are delivered and that all regulatory requirements are satisfied.

Responsibilities will include :

Plan Administration

  • Peer review pension calculations for various multi-employer target benefit, defined benefit and defined contribution plans.
  • Primary peer review on calculations for multiple clients.
  • Expert in FLA calculations for all clients, providing guidance and peer review.
  • Peer review and guidance on all complex, large amount and special case calculations.
  • Create templates for various calculations and update as needed.
  • Assist in preparation of annual filings.
  • Draft member communication from time to time.
  • Be available to meet with members in person / virtually and respond to inquiries and discuss options and answer questions.
  • Assist with plan member calls as needed.
  • Review and drafting member correspondence.
  • Identify opportunities for process efficiencies across all plans.

Leadership

  • Provide leadership to plan administrators for the plans and identify training needs, resourcing needs, mentorship and performance management.
  • Collaborate with management to develop staff and to identify opportunities for business improvement.
  • Cultivate relationships within the pension industry to support business development.
  • Provide backup to Team Leads.
  • Special Projects

  • Coordinate with team(s) on projects relating to wind-ups, missing member searches and new client implementation
  • Train team(s) as required on matters related to legislative changes, Plan document changes etc.

  • Competencies and Skills :

    Work Experience

  • Post-secondary education or formal training in actuarial work.
  • At least 5 years’ previous experience in the actuarial or pension consulting field OR completion of some actuarial exams
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Understand and be familiar with pension legislation including Family Law Act and Pension Benefits Standards Act .
  • Demonstrated organizational skills to effectively prioritize workload and meet deadlines.
  • Strong mathematical abilities with the ability to explain complex calculations.
  • Effective interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with tact and discretion.
  • Intermediate skills using a variety of computerized software packages such as Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook), related databases and Internet.
