Development Opportunity | Course Developer – Registered Veterinary Technician Micro-Credentials

Open Learning and Educational Support (OpenEd) in collaboration with Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph is recruiting a course developer(s) who can support the development of courses in the Registered Veterinary Technician Micro-Credential program. These courses will be created to align with current field practices and program and course learning outcomes. We are seeking candidates with expertise in veterinary medicine and a demonstrated commitment to teaching, online learning, and student success.

Program Information

This project involves the development of four micro-credential courses focusing on advanced competencies that support technician-led care in the following areas of practice :

  • Companion Animal Primary Care
  • Equine Primary Care
  • Team-Based Care (applicable across all practice types)
  • Care to Engage Services to Remote Communities

Each micro-credential consists of 25 contact hours (with content) plus an additional 10-15 hours of application and assessment delivered over five weeks (35-40 hours total per micro-credential).

Course developments will be starting as early as August 15, 2024 with completion by March 31, 2025. Developments will range from four to seven months, depending upon the established timelines.

Responsibilities

We are looking for a subject matter expert(s) who can work with the Manager, program Development, and Distance Education Specialists to develop each micro-credential. Please note that individuals will be contracted for one or two course (micro-credentials) developments depending upon availability and expertise.

The course developer will :

  • Participate in planning meetings as well as regular update meetings with the instructional design team throughout the project
  • Create a course framework, unit prototype, assessments, and course content
  • Develop written course content with rich and relevant real-life examples and practice case studies
  • Design learning activities and visuals that reinforce key concepts and skills to support effective knowledge sharing
  • Develop, select, and / or create appropriate course resources (articles, images, video, etc.) for the course
  • Create or select resources considering copyright, accessibility and quality assurance requirements and standards
  • Develop assessments and grading rubrics to align with course learning outcomes
  • Participate in a quality review and revision of the course within the learning management system before launch
  • Review and respond to feedback from the development team
  • Qualifications

    A veterinary technology diploma or degree from an accredited institution, and expertise in veterinary medicine or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • At least five years of work experience as a registered veterinary technician, veterinary medicine, or a related field
  • Additional education and work experience—including companion animal primary care, equine primary care, underserviced communities, and advancing veterinary team effectiveness—are considered assets
  • Experience with curriculum development—including course content, resources and assessments—is an asset
  • Experience developing materials for learning management systems to facilitate an online learning experience is an asset
  • Previous adult or post-secondary level teaching experience is an asset
  • Excellent experience balancing competing priorities for your time and appropriately managing your time to meet deadlines
  • An ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of an academic team
  • Exceptional communication, especially in the realm of writing, and an ability to articulate complex ideas, concepts and processes clearly and concisely
  • Excellent organization, presentation, and communication skills
  • A high level of confidence in using Microsoft Office Suite to develop high-quality content
  • Access to the internet and computer technology to participate in the course development, including access to audio and video equipment and software. You have the equipment to participate in the process.
  • Compensation for this contract is $10,000 CAD per micro-credential.
