Overview
The HR Manager will report to the Director of Human Resources and assist in the oversight and direction of all human resources functions within our Toronto-based law firm. This role requires a strategic mindset, strong leadership, and a deep understanding of Canadian employment law, with a focus on the unique needs of a legal services environment. The HR Manager will partner with the HR Team and firm leadership to attract, develop, and retain top legal and administrative talent, ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, and foster a positive, inclusive workplace culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement HR recruitment strategies and policies aligned with the firm’s business goals and legal industry best practices.
- Oversee full-cycle recruitment, selection, and onboarding processes for legal assistants, law clerks, and administrative staff.
- Assist and manage employee relations, including performance management, conflict resolution, and employee engagement initiatives.
- Advise HR Director on HR matters, including compensation, benefits, leaves, accommodations, and terminations.
- Assist HR Team with benefit administration and reconciliation.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable employment standards, human rights, health and safety, and privacy legislation.
- Maintain and update employee records, HRIS, and ensure confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Participate in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the firm.
- Assist HR Director with workplace investigations, disciplinary actions, and terminations in accordance with legal requirements and firm policy.
- Prepare HR reports and analytics for management review.
- Stay current with changes in employment law and HR best practices, particularly as they relate to the legal sector.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field; CHRP / CHRL designation preferred.6+ years of progressive HR experience, with at least 3 years in a law firm environment.Strong knowledge of Ontario Employment Standards Act, Human Rights Code, Occupational Health & Safety Act, and related legislation.Experience with full-cycle recruitment, employee relations, and policy development.Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.Ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion and professionalism.Proficiency with HRIS and MS Office Suite.Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.This role is a full-time in-office position.Benefits
