The Opportunity
We are seeking a full time Veterinary Intern, for a one-year term position from July 1, 2024 to June 30th, 2025. Reporting to the Director of Animal Health and Nutrition, the Veterinary Intern will be a key member of the Animal Health Management Team.
The Veterinary Intern position provides graduate veterinarians with exposure to the practice of veterinary medicine within a zoological facility.
The Veterinary Intern participates in planning and implementing preventative and emergency health care for animals maintained in the care of the Assiniboine Park Conservancy.
Your Role
- Plan, coordinate and / or participate in the physical and chemical restraint of animals for examination and treatment.
- Create diagnostic and treatment plans for veterinary patients.
- Perform diagnostic, medical or surgical treatments on animals.
- Conduct regularly scheduled immunization and preventive health care programs to maintain health of animals.
- Monitor all zoonotic diseases and their impact on the collection and staff.
- Participate in zoonotic disease training opportunities for Animal Care and Veterinary staff.
- Under direction of the Associate Veterinarian and Director, Animal Health and Nutrition, participate in establishing quarantine requirements to protect the animal collection from disease.
- Perform required testing and examination of quarantined animals.
- Assist with the supervision and training of pre-veterinary, veterinary and animal health technology students.
- Learn about and assist with positive reinforcement training in medical procedures.
- Support research by collecting samples, gathering and submitting data.
- Regularly review clinical cases with the supervising Associate Veterinarian and Director, Animal Health and Nutrition, and research diagnostic and treatment options where appropriate.
- Participate in literature review discussions and journal clubs along with the Associate Veterinarian and Director, Animal Health and Nutrition.
- Maintain resources and awareness of common wildlife health problems encountered and assist wildlife rehabilitation veterinary interns in Manitoba.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications Required
- Must hold a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from a recognized educational institute (in good standing)
- A minimum one (1) year of post-graduate clinical experience
- Experience involving work with zoo(s) or exotic animals is preferred
- Eligibility for licensing as a veterinarian in the Province of Manitoba
