Job description

Newman Theological College is seeking a visionary and faith-driven leader to serve as its next President. As the Chief Executive Officer, the President provides strategic and operational leadership, articulating a mission-centered vision for Catholic theological education and the formation of future Church leaders.

The Organization

Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Newman Theological College is a Catholic institution committed to serving the Church through theological education, missionary discipleship, and the preparation of laity, religious, and ordained ministers. Rooted in the teachings of the Catholic Church and the principles of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, the College is dedicated to equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and spiritual foundation necessary for Christian service and leadership.

The Role

The President of Newman Theological College is the chief executive officer and principal academic leader, responsible for advancing the College’s mission to provide Catholic theological education and form future leaders for the Church. The President will advance the College’s commitment to academic excellence, pastoral service, and Catholic values, ensuring that Newman Theological College remains a dynamic center for theological formation in Western Canada. Reporting to the Board of Governors, the President works collaboratively with internal and external partners to foster a strong community of faith and learning.

Key areas of oversight and responsibility are :

  • Educational Leadership and Mission Alignment : The President provides academic and spiritual leadership, promoting a mission-driven approach to theological education that aligns with Catholic teachings, the principles of Ex corde Ecclesiae, and other foundational Church documents.
  • Community and External Relations : Serving as the primary representative of Newman Theological College, the President builds and maintains relationships with the Archdiocese of Edmonton, educational institutions, donors, and community partners.
  • Administrative and Financial Stewardship : The President oversees the operational and financial health of the College, ensuring effective management of resources.
  • Governance and Board Support : The President collaborates closely with the Newman Theological College Board of Governors, providing clear, accurate information to support effective decision-making.
  • Collaboration with St. Joseph Seminary : In partnership with the Rector of St. Joseph Seminary, the President plays a key role in supporting the formation of seminarians.
  • Partnership with the Foundation of St. Joseph Seminary and Newman Theological College : The President serves as a Board member of the Foundation of St. Joseph Seminary and Newman Theological College.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a recognized leader in Catholic educational affairs, with deep experience in theological education and academic administration. You possess a strong commitment to the Catholic Church, demonstrated leadership skills, and the ability to advance the College’s mission with integrity and purpose.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A post-graduate degree, ideally at the doctorate level, in Theology or a related discipline.
  • Extensive experience in Catholic educational administration, including strategic planning, financial acumen, organizational leadership, and change management.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • A demonstrated commitment to the teachings and values of the Catholic Church.
  • Knowledge of higher education governance and how to lead in partnership with a Board.
  • Demonstrated success developing and executing a vision and strategic plan.
  • Established skills in fundraising and building collaborative partnerships.
