Our client, a mission-driven non-profit organization, is seeking an experienced and strategic Financial Controller to lead its finance function. Reporting to the Executive Director and working closely with senior leadership and the Board, the Financial Controller will oversee all financial operations, ensure regulatory compliance, and provide financial leadership to support organizational decision-making and long-term sustainability.

Work model : 3 days onsite in Oshawa North, ON
Key Responsibilities
Finance Leadership & Financial Management
- Lead, manage, and oversee the daily operations of the Finance department
- Oversee full-cycle accounting, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, management reports, forecasts, and budgets
- Develop, implement, and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Monitor financial performance and provide recommendations to support strategic decision-making
- Present financial results, budgets, and financial recommendations to senior leadership and the Board
- Ensure compliance with Canadian accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and internal policies
- Safeguard organizational assets and maintain effective financial controls
- Support the annual budgeting and financial planning process
- Build and maintain relationships with banks, auditors, and external stakeholders
- Supervise and mentor finance team members
Payroll Oversight
Oversee payroll processing and ensure accuracy and compliance with applicable regulationsMaintain payroll records including employee earnings, deductions, and accrualsEnsure compliance with employment standards, organizational policies, and regulatory requirementsCoordinate with HR on compensation changes, benefits, and employment updatesAudit & Compliance
Lead and coordinate annual external audits, including preparation of schedules and supporting documentationMaintain audit readiness and ensure compliance with internal and external reporting requirementsConduct periodic internal reviews of financial processes and controlsImplement audit recommendations and continuous improvement initiativesStakeholder & Organizational Support
Collaborate with internal departments to support financial planning and operational effectivenessProvide financial guidance to leadership on policy, risk management, and operational decisionsSupport governance requirements and financial reporting to key stakeholdersQualifications
Education & Professional Designation
CPA designation is required. Prior non-profit experience is highly desiredBachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Economics, or a related fieldExperience
Minimum 5+ years of experience as a Financial Controller or in a similar leadership roleProgressive experience in financial management and accounting operationsExperience supervising or managing finance staffExperience in not-for-profit, education, or mission-driven organizations is an assetTechnical Skills & Competencies
Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting standards and financial reportingExperience with accounting and payroll systemsAdvanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting toolsStrong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skillsExcellent communication and presentation skillsHigh level of integrity, professionalism, and attention to detailAbility to build strong relationships with leadership and stakeholdersWhy Join
