We invite you to consider a unique opportunity as an Industrial Approvals Engineer with the Government of Alberta.

The Industrial Approvals Engineer reviews and prepares approvals, registrations, and authorizations under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA). This role involves recommending limits and monitoring requirements for managing substance releases, representing the department at hearings and appeals, and providing advice to support compliance and abatement efforts.

This position provides guidance to industry, the public, and clients during both routine and emergency situations, requiring extensive meetings, stakeholder liaison, and expertise in various disciplines, professional practices, and strong interpersonal skills.

As an Industrial Approvals Engineer, you will :

  • Review approval applications, registration submissions, and Statements of Concern to assess the environmental impact of proposed activities and address substance release management.
  • Coordinate input from internal and external specialists in air, water, soil, noise, and groundwater to assess impacts on various environmental media.
  • Research scientific literature and practices from other jurisdictions to develop approval standards where Alberta guidelines are lacking.
  • Liaise with applicants, concern filers, and public groups to facilitate discussions and resolve issues.
  • Draft enforceable approvals reflecting environmental, social, and economic considerations.
  • Review monitoring data and conduct facility inspections to address air, soil, or water quality / emission issues efficiently.
  • Collaborate with industry officials to improve environmental performance and identify solutions for problems.
  • Negotiate cost-effective, environmentally acceptable solutions for identified issues.
  • Contribute to the Industrial Approvals Team on air, water, waste, and engineering issues to mitigate risks to human health, safety, and the environment.
  • Verify the accuracy and scientific validity of information submitted by industry consultants.
  • Prepare recommendations, action requests, and briefing notes for management review.
