About Us

The Correctional Services division of the Department of Justice is responsible for the administration and operation of community and custody-based programs and services for adults and young persons. Within the Correctional Services core business area there are two programs : community corrections & correctional facilities. Each of these program areas is broken down into closely related activities that have a specific impact on the programs target group.

Community Corrections has 22 offices across the province from Yarmouth to Sydney and is responsible for the supervision of both adult and young persons serving community-based sentences. The sentences include probation conditional sentence custody and supervision conditional supervision and Intensive Rehabilitative Custody and Supervision. Probation officers also supervise those released from custody on conditional releases and prepare pre-sentence investigations to assist the Courts in the sentencing process. Evidence based Program facilitation and supports to specialized courts in areas of domestic violence mental health and wellness are also part of the role of a Probation Officer as well as Restorative Justice casework and collaboration with community justice agencies.

Four (4) adult correctional facilities and one (1) youth centre provide the safety and security of person in custody while providing programs that address dynamic criminogenic factors to assist with their successful reintegration back into the community.

Nova Scotia Correctional Services utilizes an evidence-based approach in both Community Corrections and custodial facilities. Core Correctional Practices (CCP) is the foundational practice that drives reintegration and rehabilitation practices deployed within Correctional Services. Utilizing CCP Correctional Services staff can effectively interact manage behavior and help facilitate change within target populations.

About Our Opportunity

Under the general supervision of the Security Risk and Intelligence Manager the Security Risk Management Officers are responsible for assisting in maintaining security of the facility coordinating facility searches planning operational preparedness exercises as well as providing and collating information to the SRIM.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Maintenance and inventory of radios keys flashlights restraints Narcan O.C
  • Facilitation of fire and other emergency drills
  • Security inspections and facility searches
  • Risk level assessments of individuals in custody for medical temporary absences
  • Preparation of evidence and packages for outside agencies
  • Student placements
  • Security orientation for new employees and conduct facility tours
  • Hospital site visits
  • Maintaining Synergy telephones
  • Building access approval for volunteer agencies
  • Other related duties as assigned

Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for this opportunity you have completed high school and hold a minimum of five years of experience in a correctional facility. An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered. Use of force and outside escort training is also a requirement.

During the interview applicants must demonstrate an understanding and respect for the high level of confidentiality required for this position. Competencies that must be demonstrated are well developed communication and interpersonal abilities conflict resolution skills and a basic knowledge of group dynamics. As well the successful candidate will serve as a role model to Correctional Officers and individuals in custody and therefore must possess sound observation decision making and problem-solving skills as well as the ability to respond effectively in crisis situations.

Candidates must possess an attitude toward the criminal justice system that is compatible with the objectives and philosophies of the Department of Justice Correctional Services and the facility.

Some previous supervisory or leadership experience successful completion of the Department of Justice Use of Force and Outside Escort training and proficiency with the Justice Enterprise Information Network (JEIN) would be considered assets. Experience keyboarding and working in a computerized environment would also be assets.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools : written examination standardized tests oral presentations interview(s) andreference checks.

Additional Information

This is a temporary assignment position based in Dartmouth Nova Scotia. With an anticipated end date of September 2 2026.

At the job interview candidates will be issued a pre-employment questionnaire. If called at the final phase of the competition candidates will be asked to submit the completed questionnaire prior to your appointment. The questionnaire focuses on honesty and integrity and candidates must answer all questions accurately and truthfully. Dishonesty or non-disclosure will result in elimination of the candidates application.

The successful applicant will be required to receive an enhanced (secret) Security Clearance. The results of which must be satisfactory to the employer or will result in termination of your employment.

This is a 24-hour operation and a tobacco / drug free environment. The incumbent must be available to work allshifts in a 24 / 7 operation including weekends and holidays.

    Salary Range : $2475.42- $2915.57Bi-Weekly
